The country lodge was nothing short of disgusting. We were first greeted with an overwhelming smell of must and mildew upon entering the room. Upon checking the bathroom window, mold was in full bloom. The comforters on the beds felt wet from dampness. The screen on the back door was broken off.
The owners were nothing short of rude from the start and unwilling to recognize any problems with the room. Our next door neighbors in the motel arrived to a room which was as bad with the addition of lots of bugs in the bathroom and around the bed areas. The lady did not sleep in the room, but in their SUV that night. The next day they were able to get their money refunded, but only on the condition of signing a waiver stating they would not speak badly of this establishment.
My first morning I awoke thinking it was early and it would be a good time to get a shower. No such luck. Only a trickle of water came out. After 10 minutes went by, I tried again, I got in shower and battled between ice cold then scolding hot water. Needless to say, it was not a great start to the day.
Later that day is when things took a turn for the worse. I confronted the owner as to why we ended up in the lodge, instead of his Inn next door, as that was where we were originally booked. He said the Inn didn't have TV's . I told him I saw the Inn's rooms and they were quite nice and I felt since the price was the same, that that was where we should be. Our conversation continued to go downhill with even threats from him that we had smoked in the room. My wife and I do not smoke and she actually has allergies to cigarette smoke, as well as other things.
After leaving for a while, his other half arrived with the message for us to leave now. This was 7:45 pm on a Friday night. After some discussion, and asking her to be able to leave in the morning, no movement on her part, we packed up our vehicle and two kids and headed out.
We were lucky finding a nice place in Stowe called the Commodore Inn. The most unfortunate thing was we were there from Canada to play in a hockey tournament and the kids were separated from the rest of the team who were staying at another lodge next to us.
My final comments are good luck to anyone who wishes to stay under these owner’s two roofs. In all my travels I have stayed in some rough places at times, but never with owners who were so offensive and unapologetic.
