52 year old man with a moderate budget, traveling for leisure

My wife and I along with our feline companion booked a three day vacation from the 9th to the 12th of this year, at an Extended Stay Hotel, called Homestead Studio Suites (a 'pet friendly hotel' that received two diamonds rating from the AAA Tourism Editors). My wife has been a member of the AAA club for 38 years so we received the 'show your card & save' rate. We asked for an accessible room, because my wife has a disability & has problem climbing stairs just in case they didn't have elevators. So we were given a handicapped room which sounded okay with us. Upon our arrival to the hotel, we immediately noted a very strong animal urine stench from the front/back door; and all over the first floor and our room. Looking around the hallways we noted that the hotel needed cleaning, and maybe removal of the main source of the stench all throughout. Our room was small and dirty. The carpet was dirty with fowl smelling odor. The sofa had stains of what appeared to be bird droppings. There was missing furniture in the kitchenette, like chairs in order to sit down for meals. The microwave had splattered food stains from previous guests, was making strange noises and not heating up food properly. The office chair was dirty with all sorts of stains, in total disrepair & wasn't even safe to be sitting on it. There were exposed electrical wires up on the ceiling. The sliding mirror door of the closet was not only all jammed tight that we couldn't put anything inside; but also broken on the right lower side of it (a safety hazard). Our cat started itching so we had to buy her a flea collar as soon as we noted this. To make matters worse my wife had a bad fall, because the hotel neglected to properly assemble the metal/wooden frame, which was supposed to support the bed; so when my wife sat on the bed, the whole thing collapsed & she sustained a jarring & jerking motion of her spine. What if it was a paraplegic transferring him/herself from the wheelchair to the bed when it collapsed? Or a quadriplegic being transferred from the wheelchair to the bed when it collapsed? Our cat could have been under the bed when it collapsed! We called the front desk immediately and reported what had happened. Two maintenance/check-in personnel came, and it took them quite a while to assemble the bed frame which was inadvertently not assembled correctly. We were not even offered a room change. The men just laughed at us, and sarcastically said, "Enjoy the bed" then left! My wife immediately complained of spine pain which continued all throughout the night even with pain medication. We all didn't sleep the entire night due to the intermittent loud noise which sounded like a generator starting every 15 minutes all night long. The next morning, I spoke to the manager, and she filed an incident report. I was shown four rooms that we could move to, two of which were in the same poor state as ours; we eventually moved to a room on the second floor which at least had everything working and the floor and the room were void of any strong odors.

I made an emergency appointment and took my wife to the Chiropractor on 1/10/2008 to get a spine adjustment and treatment modalities on her back. The Doctor advised my wife to rest and not to stress her back at all, and to follow up with weekly treatment until regaining her pre-injury mobility and functioning status. My wife had another chiropractor visit on 1/16/2008, but she's still experiencing constant spine, neck and chest muscle pain. Our cat still has fleas so we left the flea collar on although she's an indoor cat. We're hoping that the collar will help rid her of the fleas she contracted at this hotel. The manager of the hotel called on 1/15/2008, six days after the incident asking to speak to me; but each time I attempted to call her back I was always told that she's not available to speak to me. We're still in total disbelief of our nightmarish experience at this hotel; we had a handicapped room which was supposed to be safe for disabled people; but instead we were thrown in this unsafe and substandard area of the hotel. We checked out on 1/12/2008 and were charged several hundred dollars for three nights of what should have been a relaxing mini vacation; but instead we paid this sum to have a traumatic stay & to be injured and inconvenienced.

All animal lovers, beware of extended stay hotels.

Homestead Studio Suites, Cypress, California.

My wife and I along with our beloved feline companion booked a three day stay at an Extended Stay Hotel room, called Homestead Studio Suites in Cypress, CA on January 9 to the 12th. Upon our arrival to the hotel, we immediately noted a very strong animal urine stench from the front/back door and all over the first floor and our room. Looking around the hallways we noted that the hotel needs cleaning, renovation and maybe remove the main source of the stench all throughout. Our room was small and dirty. The sofa bed had stains of what appeared to be bird droppings. I had to turn the seat cushion upside down. There was missing furniture in the kitchenette, like chairs in order to sit down for meals. The microwave was making strange noises and not heating up food properly. The office chair is in total disrepair and wasn't even safe to sit on it. There were exposed electrical wires up on the ceiling. I think they meant to put some light fixtures on it but just decided not to, and just left the hole and the live wires exposed. The sliding mirror door of the closet was not only all jammed tight that we couldn't put anything inside; but also broken on the right lower side of it (a safety hazard)!! Our cat started itching so we had to buy her a flee collar as soon as we noted this. To make matters worst my wife had a bad fall, because the hotel neglected to properly assemble the metal/wooden frame, which was supposed to support the bed; so when my wife sat on the bed, the whole thing collapsed & she sustained a jarring & jerking motion of her spine. We called the front desk immediately and reported what had happened. Two unprofessional maintenance men came over, and it took them quite a while to assemble the bed frame which was inadvertently not assembled correctly in the first place. We were not even offered a room change. The men just laughed and sarcastically said, "enjoy the bed" then left! My wife immediately complained of spine pain which continued all throughout the night even with pain medication. So, she didn't sleep the entire night also due to the intermittent loud noise which sounded like a generator starting every 15 minutes all night long. The next morning, I spoke to the manager and she immediately filed an incident report Claim. We were told that an adjuster will call us, but we never got a call even after I called and left several messages. I was shown four rooms that we could move to, (two of which were in the same poor state as ours); we eventually moved to a room on the second floor which at least had everything working and the floor and room were void of any strong odors!??

I made an emergency appointment and took my wife to the Chiropractor to get a spine adjustment and treatment modalities on her back. The Doctor advised my wife to rest and not to stress her back at all and to follow up with weekly treatments until regaining full mobility and function. The manager of the hotel called six days after the incident asking to speak to me, but each time I attempted to call her back, I was always told that she's not available to speak to me.

This is now day seven after our nightmarish stay at this so called Homestead Studio SUITES!!?? My wife is still experiencing constant spine, neck and chest muscle pain. Our cat is still scratching and we left her flee collar on although she's an indoor cat. We're hoping that the collar will help rid her of the fleas she contracted at this hotel. to all animal lovers out there, beware of this hotel or others like it! they advertize that they are pet friendly hotels, but we experienced that if you have a pet, you're thrown into a very dirty, totally disrepaired area of the hotel with such offensive strong animal urine stench; and with furniture that are not only old and dirty, but also not operable.. to make matters worse, if you get an injury on their premises you will only get laughed at and they avoid you like the plague when you try to call their insurance adjustor's to hold them accountable for your injuries.

I am not likely to return to the Homestead Studio Suites Hotel Cypress.
I would not recommend it to friends.

I was actually well impressed by being sent to the Homestead location mentioned above after visiting your here. Unfortunately my good first impression lasted only 10 to 15 minutes, until I found that I had been given wrong directions to reach the other hotel. What was even more frustrating was calling the Homestead location and being told over the phone by the site manager that he did not know how to get to the hotel himself. All he could indicate was that the location was right behind Wendy's. Isn't that great to say to someone that is not local?

Well, after finally getting to the hotel my frustration level enhanced when having a one-to-one conversation with the so-called site manager. The gentleman did not even moved his head to greet us when entering the door and seemed to be very upset we were really getting him out of his way to show us the offered room # 236; which according to him was the only one available, since all other ones had not been cleaned yet. Mind you that happened at almost 3:30 PM; which gave me a very bad impression about how serious management was about keeping the place clean and organized. The site manager even made a comment that I should not be concerned about trying to see the room before getting it for the whole week, since all hotels are the same and all rooms should also be the same, so why bother taking a look at it? After a long and slow walk to the room; which looked clean and pleasant, I decided to have it for the week. At the moment of registration, I asked the site manager to set the weekly cleaning for that coming Thursday, May 10.

Considering I was away from my room most of the time and just stopping by at night, things were actually running smooth, except for the fact that every time I had to ask for toilet paper and coffee that seemed to be a huge project for whoever was sitting at the front desk. Everything was difficult to be done. Getting a bag of coffee for the next morning was a great project and they could not really figure it out in advance that if I was having cleaning 4 days ahead, it would have been much easier if they had given me 4 bags of coffee at once. But that thought would have required a lot of brain cells activity; which was surely not their more pronounced feature. On the same note, the carpet on room # 236 did need cleaning. The room was not dirty, but you could get your feet dirty right after taking a shower, just by walking on it.

As already foreseen at that point, when I came back late at night and tired from a day out sightseeing on Thu May 10, I found the room had not been cleaned with no clean towels, bed sheets and pillow cases. Oh, and no coffee either. That happened at almost 11:30 PM. When requesting to talk to the manager-on-duty, I was told by the girl at the front desk that there was no manager-on-duty at that time of the day and the one in charge had been gone home. I was just wondering what would have happened in case of a real emergency, no manager-on-duty on site? Interesting?

At that point, I requested to be switched to another room and was given room # 140; which was the only one cleaned at that time (according to the front desk person) and with two burnt out light bulbs. Am I the only one here thinking maintenance is being left behind in that place? I hope not.

Considering I had only two nights to spend in town, I preferred not to create any problems with the 'locals' and just enjoy my vacation, even when I figured out the next morning that the coffee maker in the room was leaking all over the place. I was definitely convinced Health and Maintenance standards were surely kept at very low levels by local management, since I cannot believe this is the level expected to be kept by higher management at this organization.

This was not the first time I used Extended Stay America and/or Homestead Suites services. In reality, I had always considered them one of my first options when traveling either for business or pleasure. I am sure I will give their services another try and hopefully I will find out that the experience I had in California was just an exception to the rule. It would be too bad to see another good company have its business slowed down by poor quality and much better offers from similar business competitors.
