Holiday Inn Portland by the Bay Hotel - Page 1

Upon arrival, we were told our room was not ready, even though it was after check-in time. The room looked nice but was very dusty and the bathroom was not very clean. At 4am, we were awakened by a "wake-up call" from the front desk. A call we did not order. During the night, we were mistakenly called 5 more times. When I mentioned this to the front desk staff, they seemed uninterested and offered no apology. In general, we found the front desk staff to be curt and not very helpful. I wrote the hotel about the problems with our stay and never received a reply. I would not recommend this hotel to a friend.

The restaurant's breakfast buffet was not very good and when we ate there for dinner, several of the ordered meals were not available, leading us to make other choices.

This hotel is a typical Holiday Inn. It was absolutely not worth the $200 a night we paid. If we had gotten a better rate like $99, I would then say we got what we paid for, but I expected something better. Other hotels in the city have even a better location. Our room also had a faint "Cleaning Chemical" smell. I couldn't get the tub drain the keep the water in the tub, had to hold it down with my foot while trying to ignore a pubic hair on the edge of the tub. I did find the staff very professional.

The view from our room was outstanding. We were extremely comfortable in the room and loved being able to watch the bay as night fell. The hotel restaurant was comfortable and featured good food and excellent, very friendly, but not intrusive service. The next time we stay in Portland, we will definitely stay here.

This hotel made me feel sophisticated: The room had a very comfortable seating area separated from the sleeping area, more than in other rooms we've stayed in, but it was not a suite. There was space to move around in comfortably. This made our stay feel less like we were in a warehouse for people and more like we were being treated like people who knew how to be treated well. We slept with the drapes wide open so the lights around the bay were like a special wallpaper for the room.

I found the hotel staff to be very friendly and down to earth. I felt welcome. The location was close to the Old Port.
