with a budget, traveling for leisure

my wife & i have been doing local getaways in light of the current gas situation. we`ve had pleasant experiences at different holiday inns in the pittsburgh area, as well as west virginia. therefore we were very, very surprised on sunday 7/27. we arrived around 5:30 or so & after an indifferent check-in, we proceeded to our room. the first thing we noticed were the 2 beds...we were never asked of our preference. at the same time we also noticed chewed tramped on gum on the floor between the beds. we decided to go back to the front desk to see about being switched to a room with a king bed & no gum. the men at the desk were bothered by our request & said nothing was available. we went back to the room & decided to go to the pool. the binder of information had very little information, but it told us where the pool was. we brought our suits & were ready to relax. it was a nice warm evening & we enjoy the pool. unfortunately, it was closed. no hours posted, just locked up like no one was ever there.it looked like a pretty nice pool...except for the grass which probably wasnt cut for about 10 to 12 days, as well as the outdoor furniture which we`re sure was never scrubbed. oh well, lets head back to the room. as i mentioned, it was nice & warm & we wanted to make use of our balcony. there was no screen in the patio door but we decided to take our chances & hope the bugs stayed out.the glass patio door, i`m sure had not been cleaned in three years, easy! but, since they didnt ask about our smoking preferences, it was my only option, unless i wanted to go outside the hotel. we went to sit on the bed to watch tv, and get this! the bed flipped up! my wife & i are 5`8...my build is slender, my wife is average. we had to laugh because otherwise i`m sure my wife would have cried. no fun for me. after we laid in the middle of the bed toward the tv & tried to use the remote...didnt work! from this angle, we had a great view of the electric outlet with no plate. this was near the desk that i think was supposed to have a mirror finish...but had lost a good deal of the color leaving it just plain disgusting. we were still trying to make a night of this. we decided to turn on the air, (which was so loud, it sounded like a waterfall) & open a bottle of wine. we dont like drinking out of styrofoam cups, especially if they arent individually wrapped. we tried to call the front desk to find out where to get some real glasses...guess what! the phone didnt work! there was a note telling us to be sure to let hotel staff if there was any part of our stay we were unhappy with & we wouldnt pay for that part. we looked for a satisfaction survey to fill out, but there was none, nor was there a pad or pen. come on, they`re even in motel 6. by this time we mutually decided the night was a wash, and said the hell with it & went home. we didnt even use the beds or anything. when we left, the parking lot was practically empty. there had been a modeling contest where people see if they can get into the business. thus, i`m pretty sure they could have found us a different room. we watched probably a hundred people leave the hotel, and the parking lot was practically empty. (so much for nothing being available) when we tried to contact the hotel directly, the phone menu was cyclical or busy. eventually we thought to call free directory assistance & were connected. unfortunately, we agreed to be put on hold. after 10 minutes (according to my cell phone) i had to hang up. we`d already spent 20 minutes prior, unsuccessfully trying to get someone to answer the phone. i`m sure you can understand our bad feelings after a night like that. all i can say review wise, is buyer (travelel) beware!

29 year old male with a moderate budget, traveling for leisure

The room was large and comfortable. Room service was efficient. I didn't like the hotel restaurant as the servers were rude and unresponsive to guests. They seemed more interested in talking among themselves.

I am somewhat likely to return to the Holiday Inn Pittsburgh.
I might recommend it to friends.

We had only one light, the rest of the bulbs did not work, our sheets smelt bad and we had to call for new sheets.
