54 year old female with a luxury budget, traveling for leisure
This hotel was chosen for a romantic New Year's Eve getaway after reading so many reviews about it and Kevin, the concierge of the century. I don't think people realize all the duties a concierge offers at a top hotel. Kevin wasn't it. Don't get me wrong, if you need assistance with day planning once you reach Charleston, he certainly knows the town. However, I asked him for something out of the ordinary, not related to sightseeing and he could not accommodate and in fact grew flustered. Simple request to accommodate an emergency and it fell flat - that is not a true concierge. But yes I'm sure he knows the town. So did the servers at the local eateries that we spoke with who offered awesome tips. (by the way, stop at the coffeehouse on East Bay and talk to Molly - she gives you the skinny on great eateries.
That being said, the hotel is in a great location, one block away from King St. the major shopping street and about 4 blocks from City Market which reminded me of a flea market rather than anything historical.
The carpet on our hotel floor was not vacuumed at all during our 3 day stay - very disgusting. The king/non smoking room was adequate with a very comfortable mattress which almost made up for the two large red stains outside the bathroom.
Plenty of room in the bathroom also but attention is needed to the peeling wallpaper and missing tile grout. It's the little things that matter, the attention to detail. I don't care about free apples upon check-in or stale coffee available 24/7. If these are your priorities, this is your hotel.
Summary, the hotel is ok. Nothing remarkable. Better for a girl's shopping weekend rather than romantic interlude.

This motel is easy to find from I-26 or Hwy 17. You can pretty much walk to anything in the historic district, even the battery. Charleston is a walking city, so bring good shoes! The market is about a 15 min. walk and with the motel's location...
