53 year old male with a luxury budget, traveling for business
Despite the mixed comments here, I booked a two night stay at the Stockholm Hilton. Given the expense and my Hilton Honors status, I hoped as a business traveler, I would be met with a good stay at a well-known and trusted American brand when I arrived after a long day of travel. It was not the case, and I caution any business traveler interested in any degree of creature comforts to avoid the Stockholm Hilton at any cost. For the cost of 3290 SEK per night ($493) not including breakfast, a business traveler has to expect a room larger than a small closet. Even by European standards, this was a tiny shell of a room.
Upon arriving after a late flight from Germany, the hotel clerk was almost apologetic from the moment I approached the desk. They were full up and this was the only room they had. At midnight, I was not about the scour the city for another room. I was being sent to the special wing (mentioned here before) which is down a series of steps (no elevator), past the breakfast room, past the exercise center and to a set of second elevators. Upon entering the room, horror struck: the room was about 10 paces from door to window. It was on the street, a street filled with noisy folks coming to and from local restaurants and bars. For good measure, the train or metro (never sure which) came by on a regular basis. I tried not to unload on the poor bellman that dragged my bags down the steep flight of stairs, but by the look on his face, I think he had seen this reaction before.
To be fair, the room was clean and looked like it was straight out of a Scandinavian Design catalog. The bathroom was tiny, but decently appointed. But there wasnt even room to unpack and store my suitcase. The bed was two small twins shoved together (not uncommon in Europe) which were not the worst, but not worth the steep price.
On the positive side, the breakfast ($18 US) was very good (lots of US airline personnel there, no doubt in better rooms than mine) and the fitness center was excellent (and free).
Perhaps I have myself to blame for not heeding the warnings here, but booking through my corporate travel agency and paying top dollar (plus a Hilton Honors member) I thought would ensure me a decent room. My advice for business travelers is to avoid this hotel unless you like a tiny room on a noisy street at a high price and have no intention of getting any work done. For tourists who plan on spending little time in their room and have no issue with the steep price, the area seemed safe and the staff is pleasant. Just know what you are getting.

The decor was luxurious and reminded us that we were definitely in Sweden rather than in a US hotel in a foreign country, which was important to us.The one staff member who checked us in was not very friendly, but neither was she rude. All others...
