Centrally located in the heart of downtown, The Hilton Milwaukee City Center has long been known as the city's finest hotel, featuring 500 guests rooms and 30,000 square feet of meeting and facilities capable of hosting groups from 10 to 1,000. Founded by French fur traders and originally settled by German, Polish, Irish and Italian immigrants, Milwaukee enjoys a meltin pot heritage steeped with the cultural benefits of old world architecture, fine woods, brew masters, festivals, skilled trades and the arts. Built in 1927, the Hilton Milwaukee City Center opened for occupancy in February of 1928 as the Hotel Schroeder, boasting 850 guest rooms. During prohibition the hotel was a gathering spot for many speadeasies. In 1933, when prohibition ended, the Lorraine Room featured the city's longest bar, the 82 foot Serpentine Bar, and served beers brewed locally - Miller, Pabst, Gettelmen and Schlitz. In 1972, the hotel was sold and took on the name of The Marc Plaza. A major renovation took place with emphasis on enlarging the guest rooms which brought the hotel to it current inventory of 500 rooms. This beautiful structure has undergone many changes over the years and has just completed a multi-million dollar restoration which highlights the hotel's 1920's grandeur and elegance, while offering guests modern amenities and up to date safety and security features.
