The Hilton Chicago is one of the most famous of the older hotels in the city. Its guest services book in the room proudly displays a photo of Queen Elizabeth II (the actual queen, not the ship), although she was here decades ago. This hotel is a tall and massive block located on South Michigan Avenue across from Grant Park. Visitors can easily lose their way in here with its slightly confusing sets of elevators, long hallways and sheer size. The main floor features elegant public spaces, which lend it an air of hospitality when you are here for business meetings or dinner functions. The regular rooms are average in size, but note that many of the guest rooms with two beds also have two separate bathrooms. The last time we were here we were placed in what is basically a hospitality suite. The room had a flip-up Murphy bed, but it was a spacious accommodations included a sofabed, bar area (should I call it a maxi-bar?), a dining table, and even a live plant. The best part of this east-facing room was the great views of the city, including Navy Pier, Field Museum, and a hibernating Buckingham Fountain. The parking is typically expensive here, so park with the garage across the street for a lot less. I have never eaten at one of the restaurants on the main level, but when I attend meetings at the Hilton the dinner banquets are always top-notch.
