Experience comfortable elegance in the heart of the Historic District. Built circa 1850 as a four room house for Benjamin and Eliza Ellis, the inn has been in operation since 1985. Several additions were made to the house as the Ellis family grew. During the civil war, Company K of the 45th Massachusetts Volunteer Militia occupied the house. The most interesting change was made circa 1900 when the house was sawed in half, separated nine feet, and a separate entrance and stairway was installed to construct two dwellings. The inn offers seven guest rooms and three suites, all with private bathrooms. The Benjamin Ellis Suite has a living room with a queen sized pullout sofa bed and a bedroom with a queen sized canopy bed. This arrangement is ideal for families. The romantic Eliza Suite has a King sized bed and features a heart shaped Jacuzzi tub/shower, perfect for a special romantic getaway. The William and Emily Suite boasts a four poster queen sized bed and a heart shaped Jacuzzi tub/shower. We are within walking distance to major area attractions, antique and specialty shops, and restaurants. Gift certificates available.

There are clearly many points of disagreement with this guest. The bottom line is that, in over 15 years, we have never had such perplexing situation arise.
On the morning after the guest’s arrival, we both asked her and her mother if they had a good night’s sleep. They both said that they had. Sooki showed them around the Inn and they both made several comments that the Inn was beautiful and they loved it. They both enjoyed their breakfast immensely. There was utterly no indication that anything had been wrong.
At approximately 6:30 PM that same night, the guest sent her uncle (who was also staying at the Inn) to tell us the room smelled moldy and they didn’t know if they were going to stay. We will do anything to make sure that our guests enjoy their stay and are comfortable in our Inn. Therefore, at this point, several options were offered which the guest interpreted as “defensiveness.” We were simply trying to determine if there were any options to make them more comfortable before we cancelled four nights during our busy season. At approximately 7:00 PM, they already moved their luggage out of the room and they said they were leaving. There was no opportunity to discuss or concern on their part about whether or not they were being charged. If they truly felt uncomfortable, they should have been honest in the morning when we could have determined to everyone’s satisfaction what to do. As it was, we considered that checking out at 7:00 PM was like using the room, then demanding that they not be charged. This is the reason that the guest was charged for one night she did not stay. Despite our 7 day cancellation policy, we cancelled the remaining four nights of her stay at no charge. Being our busy season (she is false when she states the Inn was empty) we were unable to sell her room over a special event weekend and had turned other callers away. Her aunt and uncle, who she sent to initially talk to us, are repeat guests and actually extended their stay an extra night and had a great time. They stayed with us for 5 nights on this trip.
If our rooms smelled old and moldy, then there would surely be several reviews stating this, but there are not. It is also ridiculous to state that we “took advantage of two women travelers. We leave these issues to your judgment to decide. We are proud of our Inn and were recently voted “simply the best” Bed and Breakfast in New Bern.
In closing, we only wish to say one more thing. We are not here to be abused or taken advantage of. We will not respond to threats, abusive behavior, or blatant dishonesty. This person is even asking some of her friends who did not stay at our Inn to post negative reviews.

Horrible Mold Smell
In New Bern for my son’s wedding. We are out-of-State visitors. He is a Marine. First night, came in very late. We couldn't get the door open, very difficult lock to back entry door, and very dangerous steep stairs. My mother is 78 years old, lucky we had my son there to open the door for us, and to help with luggage. Rooms had horrible mold smell, room #3, a small dark room in back of house, bed so hard that my shoulder hurt the next day. We paid the same price as our relatives who had a much larger and nicer room. If we paid less, maybe we would have been happier. But, the mold smell was overpowering. On Wednesday night we were the only people there in the entire house. My aunt/uncle came the next day, and that was it in the house. We decided to leave the next day, only stayed one night. We told the owner about the horrible mold smell and he sprayed an air freshener. That made us even sicker with the sweet awful smell. He charged us for 2 nights when we only stayed for one night. That is like stealing from us. He stole $150 from us, and took advantage of 2 women. I am sure he would not have done that to a man. We stayed one night and that is all that we owed him. We went to the Hilton and had a very nice room. We were planning to stay for 6 nights, he said we could change rooms for a few nights but would have to go back to the moldy, little room over the weekend. We didn’t want to change rooms back and forth. If we knew he was going to charge us for the second night we would have stayed in another room there for that second night. But, he didn’t tell us that. He was not going to get another customer to replace us since the town was dead. I think he was desperate to get some income and took advantage of us. My suggestion is to stay at another bed and breakfast. Some relatives stayed across the street, and it was a lot cheaper and nicer. Check it out before you waste money on this place. Bed and Breakfasts are fun and have atmosphere, but this place didn’t work out. Owner very defensive and stubborn. I am sure he will write a long response to this denying everything, and maybe saying things that aren’t true. Mold is not good for people to breath, and something should be done about this. The other rooms smelled old, but not so moldy. The overwhelming mold smell came out of the closet in that room.
Our family drove from Ohio to the Carolinas for a 10 day vacation. On the way to our Hilton Head timeshare we decided to drop by New Bern to experience it's coastal charm and southern hospitality. Our expectations were greatly exceeded!...
