For many years, I've been making quarterly trips to Alexandria for two-day business meetings. Since I live on the Northeast corridor, I typically travel on Amtrak to Union Station in D.C., where I catch the Metro to the King Street Station in Alexandria.
Over the years, I've stayed at the Embassy Suites, the Alexandria Hilton and other nearby hotels, but since discovereing the Hampton Inn Alexandria Old Town, a few years ago, I've become a regular patron of this property.
The Hampton Inn is located on King Street, a few blocks from the Metro station. The hotel is nicely appointed without being pretentious. The room rate includes a buffet breakfast with a reasonable variety of options. The public areas are comfortable, and the staff is friendly and helpful. Guest room are roomy and well appointed. Unlike most Alexandria hotels, the Hampton has free wi-fi in all of its rooms, which enables me to conveniently check email and get some work done in the evenings using my lap top computer. To my knowledge, no other lodging in the area offers all of these attributes at a comparble cost.
I haven't used either the pool or exercise facilities, so I can't comment on these. Otherwise, based on my experience with this Hampton Inn, I would recommend it for either business travel, or for a home base to visit in Old Town and beyond as a tourist.
