with a budget

Our 2nd stay here was bad enough for me to write this time. My main complaints are with the restaurants. Was here in 2007 and ordered a sandwich in the restuartant. Waiter came back to say the speciality bread for this special sandwich was out. Ok, I gave them a 2nd choice. Few minutes later they tell me that was out so I said if you got white bread then use that. It was to come with a special sauce. They brought me the sandwich with just meat and bread; no condiments or nothing! Ok, I can live with this since our room was nice. Mistakes happen I know.

Going again this year we thought things might have improved. Wrong. Eating in the restuarant with another couple the 3 of us got the buffett and my husband ordered a rueben sandwich. After we all went to the buffett bar 2 times and 45 minutes later his sandwich was no where to be found.....nor was our waiter. Even our drinks had not been refilled and the dirty dishes were building up. I found a staff person and asked him to check on the sandwich order. 10 minutes later no show for the sandwich or the staff person. I finally found a gentleman cleaning off a table and asked him to inquire about this sandwich. He promptly returned to our table with the food and an apology plus he cleared off our table of the dirty dishes. So the 3 of us sat and talked while my husband ate his food. THEN our lost waiter returns with our checks and a robotic, recited line of thanking us for coming and it was a pleasure for him to serve us! My friend said since there was such a long delay in the food my husband should get some kind of compensation. This made the server LAUGH! My friend said to him immediately it was NO laughing matter. (Oh be assure I KNOW the servers name) He immediately stopped laughing, walked away and came back with a discount off the sandwich. I started to laugh because the right thing to do was to have us not pay for it at all. As we started to leave the table again our server gave us his robotic and recited (word for word) exchange.

Then to top off the evening my husband went down into the lobby to chat with some friends and so I decided to stay in the room and get settled in for the night. I heard the door handle jiggling like my husband was having a hard time with his wrist band and so I got up to open the door. As I was reaching for the handle the door opened up and A MAN STARTS TO WALK INTO MY ROOM. I screamed at him that he had the wrong room, slammed the door and immediately called the front desk. It took my 5 attempts at calling the front desk before anyone answered. I was shaken up and was calling my husband on the cell phone to get back into the room at the same time. Finally a clerk answered and she said she would send security to our hallway which we heard h im waking the hall with his walkie talkie. She said it was possible that a maid thinking a guest had left his hotel band in the room just used their master key to let him in! What would have happened if I was walking out of the shower and ran into him?

We were here both times for a national car show. We have voiced our experiences to the panel and we will not be returning to the lodge. When we got home this last time my husband received a survey about our experience! He filled it out and then I sent a personal email to the marketing office about what had happened to us both times. Since I sent the email I have heard NOTHING back from them. No apology, no nothing.

The ONLY thing I have to say good is if you have a family with childrent this is a great and safe place for them.....but order Dominoes for your meals. Oh yes, when we decided to order from Pizza Hut in the lobby instead of going to the restaurant when we placed our order for subsandwich we were told they ran out of food!!!! So to end our eveing we had to drive into Williamsburg and find a Chinese take out place!!

We will not be going back here at all. Two strikes and you are OUT in my book.

when my family and i walked inside, all we could say was,"Wow!" the atmosphere was very pleasant, very family oriented. the rooms very nice, except that my daughter is terribly afraid of bugs and she found a couple in the room, one even on the bed! the food very nice, especially the breakfast,my husband said that they were the best pancakes he ever had.my kids enjoyed theirselves immensely in the waterpark, i even joined them on a couple rides. my son especially enjoyed the MagiQuest. we plan to return next year.

43 year old female with a moderate budget, traveling for leisure

My kids loved it but I don't like the way the place was run. First of all when making reservations we were told our room wouldn't be ready until 4:00 P.M. but that we could use the water park at 1:00. We got there around 1:00 since the directions on the internet were missing a step and we got lost. When we got there I saw the longest lines I have ever seen in a hotel lobby--period. It took about 40 minutes to check in which cut into our time, which mattered since we were only staying there one night.

For almost $300.00 I was disappointed that there were no extras that nice hotels usually provide such as a continental breakfast, free newspaper and free coffee in the lobby. For the nightly fee they charge they could do this to make guests feel more welcome.

The adult whirlpool was broken during our whole stay so I had to put up with classless children and a teenager that didn't know you are supposed to relax in a whirlpool and kept playing and splashing and disturbing my enjoyment of the whirlpool.

The noise was terrible and the hotel did not seem to be built in a sufficiently soundproof manner. I tried to put my toddler in a pack-in-play to sleep but at 9:30 the kids above us used thier bunk beds as a trampoline and kept jumping and blamming on the floor. They did this for about 3 hours. Then at 11:00 when they have a supposed "quiet" rule approximately 8 teenage girls staying in the room two doors down started being loud and running up and down the halls. I had to call the front desk 3 times altogether so that management and security could come up and try to stop it or catch them. By 12:30 it finally quieted down and then because I was so upset it took an additional hour to go to sleep. I ended up falling asleep at around 2:00 AM.

When I complained the next morning they gave me a $15.00 coupon to a coffee shop that has pastries, so I supposed that was nice.

All in all I think that the price is too high, there are no extras or amenities that other nice hotels have and their check-in procedures are too slow. There needs to be a revamping of their procedures in my opinion and a reasonable price so that people don't try to pack 8 teenage girls in one room to make it affordable would be nice.

The best part of my stay at GWL was the fact that my kids absolutely loved it. From a parent's view point, I can tell you that it was frustrating. Within the first hour there, I was already charged for food and drinks that I didn't order (imagine being charged for alcoholic beverages when you don't drink). They checked me in and told me that they will "look into it". An hour later, I'm trying to call them for a resolution of the bill and nothing. I finally dragged my two kids (both wanting to go to the park) back to the desk to talk to the manager. I waited...and waited...and waited. I was starting to steam. After telling my problem for the tenth or so time, I finally got an apology. At least it was resolved. The fact that it took two hours to resolve this bill when I first checked in was CRAZY.

The room had more vertical space than horizontal. The shower was below standard. I would have expected a more pleasant feel to the room. The carpet was dingy and there were cigarette butts on the patio.

I agree with the other reviews out there regarding the life guards. They really needed a lot more of them posted. Not nearly enough and therefore, you really need to watch your smaller kids very closely.

The locker room was a joke. 3 shower stalls for the amount of volume in the waterpark? Most of us were there before check-in/check-out, so it wasn't sufficient.

39 year old male with a moderate budget, traveling for leisure

Where do I start? My wife and I had been planning on taking our 2 boys here for a while. We finally made the reservations, keeping an eye on our budget. IT IS VERY EXPENSIVE TO STAY HERE. (We are not rich by any means.) The hotel itself is very pleasing to the eye on first notice. But almost right away we started to notice a lot of little things that were not in keeping with a hotel that charges over 400.00 a night! The water park area was ok, my kids liked it, but not enough lifeguards (at 400.00 a night). The food offered was not very good. Our hot dogs was stale. We deciede to eat out the remainder of our stay. The room was VERY average. The shower was nice but the room seemed a little small.I have stayed in Best Western hotels that had better rooms . The beds were way too soft and the pillows almost non existant. And there seemed to be a lot of litter and empty soda cans, wrappers laying around. I would not make so much of an issue out of these things, but the price did not reflect a quality resort. I cannot recommended this place.
