male with a moderate budget, traveling for leisure
My wife and I planned to stay at the Gatlinburg Red Roof for a weekend getaway October 8-10th. We had read the reviews and weren’t expecting a 4 star hotel but did expect a “remodeled” (per their website) clean room. This couldn’t have been farther from the truth.
The first thing we noticed upon opening the door was a musky smell and an overall dingy appearance. The walls had not been wiped down as evidenced by the dirt smears, the carpet was stained in several places around the sink area, the bathroom door was separating into two pieces and would not close more than halfway and the microwave and refrigerator still had remnants of spilled/splattered food in them. The balcony area was disgusting and the mismatched furniture only added to the charm. As if the cobwebs, mildew, and lack of a view weren’t enough to detract someone from sitting outside the décor left a lot to be desired. There was one padded type office chair, one plastic chair, and a dirty ashtray complete with ashes, butts, and burn marks that obviously wasn’t emptied prior to our arrival (did I mention this was a non-smoking room??).
The hotel also boasts “recently remodeled rooms”; exactly what constitutes a remodel? Is it the $5 light fixtures that didn’t work properly? The comforter and bed linens infused with the faint smell of smoke and body odor? The 2 recently painted accent walls that looked like they were painted by a 5 year old hopped up on caffeine? The ceiling trim that was installed with caulk and falling away from the wall? Maybe the bathroom door that was separated into 2 pieces and wouldn’t close?
The desk clerk working the day we checked in was very pleasant and personable but completely overwhelmed and incompetent. After seeing the above described room we immediately went back to the front desk and informed him of the condition and stated that I would like a refund and we would find another hotel for the weekend. I was then told that he didn’t know how to do a refund and would need to contact someone. Finally, over an hour later I was refunded the 2nd and 3rd nights but not the 1st since I had made a reservation and the hotel has a 48 hour cancelation policy. Only a manager could issue a refund for the original night and of course there wasn’t one on site that evening and I would need to call back in the morning. So I called the following morning, and the morning after that, and the morning after that and never could reach a manager. But the clerk who answered the phone told me that the manager had been trying to reach me as well on a cell phone but surprisingly never left a message.
It was not until we had retuned home several days later that I was finally able to make contact with the manager who sounded eerily similar to the girl who wasn’t the manager the day before. At which time she never apologized for the room’s condition nor made any attempt the remedy the situation. The only thing she could do was take a statement from me and call me back in an hour or so with a resolution. That was over a week ago and I still haven’t received a return call.

For the price of resvering a jacuzzi suite at Guesthouse, someone else would be paying for a single room in Gatlinburg. The value was great, the room was extremely clean, and the location was secluded enough that our stay was very quiet....

If you could rate -100,I would!
This was a nasty hotel that should be torn down! My room had a leak in the roof, dirty sheets, a dirty tub and toilet that tried to fall over when sat on. I booked the room through PL on line. After paying them over $80 for two nights, I was charged an additional $22 at the desk by management, for a non smoking room. The hotel was close to empty and this made no sense to me! When I complained to Price Line, I got no response at all. When I called Guesthouse Intl, they claimed to have no affiliation with this unit and suggested I contact the owner. Dont get taken!
