Surrounded by lavish gardens, the Manele Bay Hotel sits high above the white sand beach of Hulop'e Bay on the island of Lana'i, overlooking the nearby island of Kaho'olawe. Brilliant red lava cliffs and rock formations provide a dramatic contrast to the blue-green waters of the sea below. Sixth largest of the major Hawaiian islands, Lana'i is approximately 13 miles wide and 19 miles long, with ground elevations varying from sea level to more than 3,400 feet. Hulop'e Bay, Lana'i's finest white sand beach, is a 10-minute drive from quaint Lana'i City, the islands only town. Secluded Lana'i has only 2,800 full-time residents and miles of untouched beaches. Two resorts have been developed by Castle & Cooke, Inc., as part of an overall plan for Lana'i geared to the diversifying the island's economic base for the benefit of its residents and the preservation of its unique environment. The Manele Bay Hotel's 250 luxury guest rooms and suites feature spectacular views of the ocean and Lana'i's dramatic coastline. The elegant two-story buildings reflect a blend of Hawaii's traditional Kama'aina and Mediterranean architectures, with arcaded loggias sloping roofs. This was our second trip to Manele Bay and it was definitely worth it!
The hotel setting is breathtaking, its on a beautiful bay with a perfect white sand beach. The room and bathroom were very large and nicely furnished, with a great patio. The resort has three great restaurants and a nice open-air bar. Other amenities include a new gym overlooking the bay, a full-service spa, an awesome golf course, easy hiking and snorkeling.
Its probably my favorite resort destination on Earth!

I wouldn't normally review a hotel that I haven't stayed the night in, but as the two Four Season resorts are fundamental stops in your visit of Lanai, I thought I should mention something about them. The first thing I will say is that if you can...

We stayed at the Manele Bay Hotel shortly after 9/11 so we got a really good rate, and the hotel was not very crowded. I have heard that the hotel has gone downhill in recent years, but when we were there, it was a spectacular place. (Note: I hear that Four Seasons has bought the resort and is doing massive renovations, so it should be an excellent resort once again in 2006.)
Our room was on the ground level near the pool, and was nicely decorated and had great amenities. The pool is very lavish and is about 100 feet above the beach area and has a great view of Manele Bay. We went down to the beach on most days. The beach is removed from the hotel, so it can be preserved in its natural state. I was able to snorkel among the wild dolphins that come into the bay throughout the day (I was able to keep up with them for oh, about 5 seconds!)
I played the Challenge at Manele Golf Course, which has some very senic holes right on the cliffs of the island. It's expensive, but a great course. There's also a walking trail along these cliffs that makes a great morning walk.
Dining options are great, but limited. We liked the golf course club house for dinner as a more casual option. We also dined at the Logdge at Koele, which is recommended, too. Breakfast buffet is really nice and has all you could want.
Make sure to walk out beyond the beach to the large rock that extends into the Pacific - it's a great place to watch the sunset!
Lanai was a welcome break from the hustle and bustle of the city. We got exactly what we were looking for - sparsely populated beaches, pristine waters, and relaxing atmosphere. There are hiking paths near the hotel, you can see Maui and...
