The Fairfield Inn and Suites Downtown is one of the newer Chicago properties of the ever-expanding Marriott chain. The hotel has a somewhat quiet location considering it is only two blocks east of the Magnificent Mile of North Michigan Avenue. This fairly small property fits in with this calmer area, as its front facade looks like that of an apartment building. The Fairfield has mostly standard rooms with a few suites in the mix. I was fortunate enough to stay in one of the mini-suites here. It was like living in an apartment, with the living room area by the door and the bedroom around the bend in the back. There is no door separating the living room and bedroom, but the way the spaces are arranged still affords an air of privacy. Each of these two spaces has its own television set. The living room includes a sofabed, microwave and a small refrigerator. Local calls are free so that makes it easy to order a pizza. The spaces reflect a generic Marriott-chain decor, and the bathroom has a cheap look to it, but everything was functional. Several friends dropped in to visit me, but one of them was turned away at the front desk when the reservation agent could not find my name in the system. Guests can enjoy the value of a free continental breakfast in the morning. It was nothing special, but hey it was free.
