Right before we left for this vacation I read many reviews both good and bad about this resort. Some of the reviews made me nervous about our vacation but now that it's over I have to say that all in all it was a very good experience.
One of the common complaints that I read about was quality of service at the front desk, but we rented through Panama City Resorts Rentals Direct (I do not have any association with this buisness, or know anyone that does. I just give credit where credit is due) and never had to deal with the staff at the desks, so honestly couldn't say whether the complaints that I read about were accurate, or not. We were able to go straight to our room and although it was still being cleaned when we got there (we were several hours early) they let us stay and was very courteous and even recomended restaurants to try (and NOT to try).
Another common complaint was about the elevators. It is a very confusing elevator system to get from the parking area to the room, but after the first day we had it figured out and didn't have any more problems after that. The elevators are busy as you would expect for a resort this size, but they are VERY fast if you don't have to make too many stops before your floor.
Another complaint was about the advertised ammenities that the resort offers that aren't open yet. This part was true. Starbucks was open when we were there (early August 2008) but the spa is not yet open. This was not a big deal for us, but may be for others.
We thought that our room was exceptionally furnished and a very good value for the location and ammenities that it offered. Leather couch, fully furnished kitchen with granite countertops, large screen tv in the living room with extensive cable line-up with many premium channels, flat screen tv in the bedroom, and a wonderful balcony that my wife and I enjoyed waking up and drinking coffee from every morning.
The beach was beautiful and the pool was fine.
All in all we were very happy with our Panama City, and Emerald Beach Resort vacation experience and would recommend it to anyone. I would suggest renting through an owner or rental company directly as this seems to simplify the check-in process. Although it's true that there are still some ammenities that are not completed, I believe that it will be a first class resort once complete.
