51 year old with a moderate budget, traveling for leisure

I reserved a room with two queen size beds and non smoking. When I arrived the front desk explained that I got a goverment rate and since I wasn't a goverment employee that I wasn't charged enough. I know what I booked and the only discount I received was for senior traveler(50+ years of age). Our room wasn't ready and was told to return afer 3:00. We did and was then informed that I could be given a room with one queen size bed and non smoking since I reserved two queen sized beds and SMOKING, which I know I didn't. We took the single queen room and proceeded to our room so as not to make waves and we're not smokers anyway and could deal with one bed. I have never stayed in a room that looked like this. First of all it had a very strong smell of cigarette. The desk chair was so wobbly that I was afraid to sit in it for fear that it would break. The lamp shades on the wall were cracked and yellow and very dirty. There was only two bath towels and all the towels had a strong smell of bleach. So much so that when I washed my face with a wash cloth my face was red and irratated. The phone in the room never worked. I tried several times to make a phone call to the ferry but I could never get through, I would get a dial tone but in the middle of dialing the phone would make some beeps and nothing went through. The only light in the bathroom blew out during the night. There was no way to replace in the dark or even in the morning because it had some type of cover over it. It wasn't very fun taking a shower the next morning. I really didn't want to deal with the front desk because he gave us such a hard time when we checked in and I could smell alcohol on his breath. Also the only ice machine only gave ice in big chunks and then made some loud rattles and stopped completely. I would have left this room immediately after we entered the room because of it's condition but was afraid all the other hotels in Mackinaw City might be filled. Also the so called "continential breakfast" that was offered, I didn't want to sample since all I saw in the very small lobby was a dirty toaster and coffee machine. Also the wall air conditioner would come on but would stop working after a few minutes with the room still very warm

I am not likely to return to the Econo Lodge at the Bridge.
I would not recommend it to friends.
