50 year old male with a luxury budget, traveling for leisure
We have found this to be a great family friendly hotel. This hotel is on the National Register of Historic Places and is a classic New England experience. As the hotel's brochure says, this Grande Dame makes no pretense about her age. That is refreshingly honest.
The kids love the outdoor heated swimming pool in the summer, especially after returning from hiking and biking the many trails in the White Mountains. We find this hotel wonderfully located and has drop-dead views from the hotel's 280 foot veranda. Numerous Alpine ski areas are minutes from the hotel while the mega-trails of Jackson Touring are just outside the front doors! The tax-free outlet centers in North Conway are just minutes away.
The hotel's floors creek and the door knobs can be a bit wobbly; but, this hotel offers great value. The rooms are basic, but comfortable. The rooms do not have A/C - but we do not come to the mountains to sit in man-made air conditioning...there is an endless supply of cool mountain breezes. The color TV has a vast array of channels and our room had an iron and ironing board available.
The Tavern and Dining Room offer consistent food quality and the prices are fair and reasonable. We recommend the Sunday Brunch which includes live jazz music. The buffet is extensive and there is no need to eat for the rest of the day, and for only $15.95!
The golf course is only 9-holes; but, it is USGA rated and has one of the best PGA rated golf pro's in the business - Bob McGraw. This course is great for beginners, regular golfers, students and women - but the advances golfer will find several challenges to this pretty little course. Many views from this course are stunning and its fairways run along the Wildcat River, the first protected river in America.
The hotel has free WIFI throughout the hotel and our kids love it and keep in touch with friend when we are away from the city. The lower level game room offers an array of video games and pinball machines. The ping pong table is free to use. There is a self service washer and dryer available and this enables us to travel lighter knowing we can recycle our clothing during our travels. There is an indoor hot tub and saunas available, as well.
Bottom line is this: if you are looking for the Ritz or Four Seasons - this hotel is not for you. This hotel is a rare jewel in a disappearing world of old world hotels. This hotel is very clean, comfortable and offers value for what you receive. We have returned often and have never been disappointed.

Okay
All Review Photos This is a rustic hotel, somewhat off the beaten path. It's a little run down around the edges, but very friendly. The room was spacious, clean and comfortable with a grand view over the autumn brushed hillsides.
