We stayed at Die Heimat this weekend for two nights. It has been more than 20 years since we visited the Amana Colonies, and Die Heimat has always been one of our favorite retreats.
There have been lots of changes to the Amana Colonies and to Die Heimat in that time. Some good, some bad.
Die Heimat is still "Amana" in a bottle! Lovely furniture made in the colonies, great quilts on the beds, peaceful paint scheme, no overdone decorations. The rooms are very quiet and clean. It is conveniently located, yet misses some of the weekend hustle, which is our preference. There are still no phones in the rooms, which we also see as a plus.
Just a few changes/upgrades would make this a truly wonderful place. Better bed linens and mattresses. Either better breakfast or a "continental" breakfast, the hot dishes are disappointing. And please, find some way to make the internet accessible to guests! I want to be secluded, not completely isolated.
Kudos to the "new" owners who have made many positive changes. Just a little way to go and this will be truly first class.
