The first hotel on the coast. This is a state park and in it's original condition. No TV's phones and at night all you hear is nature. Nessled under a redwood grove and a stream you will enjoy the best Big Sur has to offer. The restaurant is...

I love the website..(nothing else)
I hate the customer care provided by them. I booked with them for a hotel and there was no A/c or fan . Even the hotel allowed a checout without charge but the hotels.com is still playing....no refund...loss of money...losss of time...and all the issues .....spoiled my trip ........so be careful.......

It's Thursday, July 3, 2008, I am over in Spokane for the 4th but my thoughts are a 1,000 miles south...The news is bad, really bad...I don't pray easily but my thoughts are with everyone in Big Sur tonight, particularly Deetjen's. I've stayed there numerous times over the years as well as at Post Ranch and Ventana. But Deetjen's is a place from my mom's childhood...an austere elegance that can not be found anywhere else today...I only hope it's there to visit again...

This is the quintessential Big Sur lodge. Theres no place like Deetjens Big Sur Inn, a vintage-1930s compound of rough-hewn redwood lodges listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Covered with flowering vines and surrounded by towering trees, they look like fairy-tale cottages, each one an odd shape and size, and furnished with mismatched carved wooden antiques, rag-wool rugs, and antique curios.
The Chateau Fiasco room feels like a tree house, indeed, you have to duck beneath a twisting tree trunk to reach the door. Fussy travelers, stay away: there are no locks on the doors, maids come every other day, and bathrooms are strictly utilitarian, with separate hot-and-cold taps and fiberglass shower stalls. And single-wall construction means that noise travels, so quiet is the rule here, no kids allowed.
Book one of the eleven fireplace rooms for maximum romance, especially in wintertime. If youre on a honeymoon, speak up: theres one very private cabin far from the others.

All Review Photos Helmuth Deetjen arrived in California in the early 1930s, on the run from the authorities of his native Norway. He discovered the outstanding and secluded beauty of Big Sur at a time when Highway 1 had just been built.
