I arrived in the evening. The hotel is independently owned and the owners were friendly, although they did talk down on my making the reservation via a website while I was checking in. It appeared they did so because they get paid less when it is booked via a third party (they specifically said this). The lobby was clean, but the check-in desk was cluttered with papers and knick-knacks. When I got to the room, it was disappointing - it did not look like the promotional photos online at all. If they have a renovated section of rooms (like the pictures) I did not see it. My room appeared to be outdated and worn (i.e. fixtures, phone, decor looked to be from the early 90's) and was not very clean. The walls had many scuffs and scrapes and could have done with a new coat of paint. There were spiderwebs in the corners of the room, and the air conditioner appeared to be of so-so cleanliness and worn (i.e. functional but 15-20 years or so old). The bathroom, again, was sufficient but looked like it was only superficially cleaned - it needed a good scrubbing. I did not check any of the other features of the hotel as it was in the evening, although I did make use of the continental breakfast, which consisted of prepackaged muffins, orange juice, and coffee.
The hotel is located in a very rural area amongst 2 or 3 other hotels and a handful of fast food restaurants, but beyond that there didn't appear to be any other development. I stopped for food as well - the people there were nice although "country" in character - the area is definitely not your typical suburban-off-the-expressway spot.
In summary, I would rate the hotel and area as a skip-unless-necessary. Frankly, while the staff was nice, the hotel was not up to par with what I would expect from a national chain. I don't expect much from a $50-$65 a night room, but I do expect for it to be clean - i.e. no spiderwebs, painted walls, scrubbed bathtubs. It reminded me more of an independent, one-off hotel than a national franchised location. Rock Hill is 15-20 minutes down the expressway with ample hotel (and food/outing) choices - I would look there instead.
