The room smelled awful when we walked in, truly overwhelming. We had to open the window and the door and let it air out for nearly an hour, with the poorly-working air conditioner running.
The smell was something we couldn't place. The deadbolt had been busted and was no longer usable. Everything was old in the room except the shower rod and curtain, which were brand new. I woke up to one of my roommates saying, "I think someone died in this room."
Considering the circumstances, it seems likely (perhaps put a Do Not Disturb sign on the door, locked the bolt, and hung him-/herself from the shower rod. The person stayed past however long they had paid, and eventually the door was forced, breaking the bolt. It was the only explanation of which we could think.
But at checkout, when we asked the woman at the front desk if anything had happened in that room recently, she looked quite serious, blinked very quickly and strangely, and asked, "Why? What makes you think that?" If something did happen, they should have at least aired out the room. Even if nothing did happen, the stay was certainly not an enjoyable one at all, and quite a bit eerie. I would not go back.
