36 year old with a luxury budget, traveling for business
This hotel is now Columbia Inn City Centre while it's in renovations to become a Courtyard. I stayed here in early February and found my stay to be completely unbearable except for two of its staff.
I was checked in on Thursday night by an extremely rude little balding man and he is apparently the front desk manager. I had been quoted a rate of $89, but when I got there my rate was changed to $99. He told me that the $89 rate was a mistake and he outright refused to give me the rate I had been quoted. He said, "I am the front desk manager, and you cannot have this rate of $89."
The next morning I complained to another manager about the way I was treated the night before. Her attitude was just like his and was apparently to busy to be bothered with a guest's complaint. She told me she would take care of it, but it was the annoyed look on her face and tone of her voice that told me that she really couldn't care less. I thought to be a manager at a hotel, you had to have customer service skills.
The next night I returned from my meeting to find that I could not park in the outside parking lot. This was a big hassle because the outside parking lot was next to where the temporary front entrance to the hotel was, but I had to park in the garage and walk around the entire building. When I finally got up to the front desk, he was there and I complained to him about the parking situation. He rudely explained that he couldn't do anything about it and said that I would have to deal with it for now. A clerk had been checking another guest in while I spoke to the manager, but as soon as she was done she explained that there was an easier way to get from the parking lot to the main entrance and offered to show me the way herself. While she showed me the easier way, I told her I didn't like parking down in the garage for safety reasons. She said she completely understood and explained that we were in a safe area since we were surrounded by the university and students were always walking around but assured me that if I felt unsafe she would get someone to walk me to and from my car if I wanted.
When I returned to the hotel that night after dinner I found that none of the ice machines in the hotel worked. I went downstairs to complain and to see if I could get ice somewhere else. Again, I ended up having to talk to the manager, but luckily the nice clerk came out of the office to hear me complaining once again. She quickly told me to follow her into the restaurant, that was closed by the way, where I met another friendly clerk who was setting the restaurant up for the next morning. She explained the situation to the clerk and asked if she would mind getting me some ice from the kitchen. She immediately jumped to help and told me to make myself comfortable while she went in the back. She also asked me if I wanted anything to drink since she was sure that the drink machines on the floors weren't working either. She didn't even charge me for the drink! When she returned with my drink and ice, she told me that I could sit in the restaurant and finish my drink if I wanted.
It was the little things that were done by these two very nice clerks that made my stay enjoyable, and those two are the only reasons I would go back to this hotel.
