with a budget, traveling for business

It is important to note this is a hostel not a hotel, therefore you get what you pay for. If your looking for a budget hotel near Central Park this is a good pick.

17 year old female with a moderate budget, traveling for leisure

my friends and me decided to go to new york for spring break. we were 4 girls aged 16-18 from GA, all of us international students.

we were all so happy when we found that cheap hostel to stay in. we all knew that we can't expect a great place, we just wanted a room to sleep.

when we finally got there at 10pm (we had the wrong address) we already had a strange feeling about the place. but hey what could we expect for so little money? we had booked a 4 people room and when we got there the clerks said it was not available anymore. the clerks looked like criminals to me, seriously, i was pretty scared.

then they told us we had to split up, 2 of us together in a 10 bed dorm. it was so late and we were so tired from the trip, so we decided to just have a look.

i am not kidding when i say that that hostel is the worst place i have ever seen in my life. it looks like a house for homeless people. i was afraid the stairs would break underneath us, the walls were neon colored, everything super small. the bathroom was unbelievable, how in the world could a bathroom ever be so dirty and nasty?! i felt really sick to my stomach. when we found out that the 10 people dorms were for both sexes i freaked out. one of our door couldn't even be opened, why in the world can't they open their doors??!! when i saw men walking in the room we were supposed to stay in, russian girls smoking and drinking in there, it was enough for me. we decided we couldn't stay at that place. i felt so unsafe, i've had the worst images in my head of what could happen to us. i was right before crying and my friend actually started to cry.

LUCKILY we got our money back (not the reservation amount though) and we just left that place.

please please please whatever you do, do NOT stay there! i am not spoiled and picky, i felt really really in danger at that place.

we were lucky to know a tour guide that could find us a nice hostel in flushing to stay in, which was just as cheap and way better. clean and most importantly SAFE!

after that shock we were able to enjoy our stay in new york.

This was the worst experience of my life: disgusted, unsafe, the most dirty bathroom I have ever seen, and ENORMOUS BUGS in the room!

22 year old female with a economy budget, traveling for leisure

My friend and I planned to spend a weekend in New York City on a budget and came across Columbus Studios. The upper west side location was perfect, but everything else was FAR from. Upon arrival the ignorant staff checked us in and sent us to the creepy, (and infamous to those who have experienced Columbus Studios) adjacent building. Not only was this building unsanitary, but must have been in violation of every health and building code in the book. The room was shaded two different shades of lime green, there was a filthy glob of hair hanging out of a nasty hole in the wall, and the carpet was stained beyond belief. The bathroom even topped the room (as if thats possible)- cockroaches in the bathtub, exposed hot water pipes, and stained EVERYTHING! As if surface filth wasn't enough, the fire alarm was nonexistent, there was no lock on the door entering the building, and our room had no peephole (no way to see the sketchy drug dealers and prostitutes passing by!)My friend and I by NO standards were expecting much, and this place was by far the most disgusting place I have EVER seen! AVOID this place at all costs.

DO NOT STAY HERE. I went to New York for a long weekend with my friend, and decided to stay at Columbus Studios. BAD IDEA. We weren’t expecting anything fancy/nice at all, just a place to stay. We had no idea what we were getting into. We checked in and the girl at the counter gave us our keys, but told us to go to the building next door. We went in to the building, where there was no security as promised (not to mention the front door didn’t even lock, so the key was pointless). We proceeded to walk upstairs past a “beware of dog” sign and strange noises coming from the door. We quickly walked up to our floor and (literally) had to body slam the swinging door to the hallway open. We then got to our room where the walls were painted lime green and there was a bed in the middle. The other amenities were not a TV or a sink as promised, but instead a wad of hair (yes, hair) and wires coming out of the wall (painted a brighter shade of lime green), the fire alarm ripped out of the ceiling, and what looked like blood spattered above us. There was also a nice handprint running down the side of the wall (which was cracking everywhere). Our light was above us with a hanging string down to the bed. The floors had more stains than I’ve ever seen in one place. The bathroom had the biggest cockroach I have ever come across in the tub and was very dirty. There were mice in the floors and walls and I would periodically bang my foot on the floor to get them to go away.

My friend and I slept there for only one out of the three nights we booked. We went back to talk to the manager later who wasn’t there . The girl at the front desk asked what was and on hearing informed us that “they don’t put girls in the other building because it’s so unsafe.” EXCUSE ME?! We are two young girls who were just put in a drug den, and she openly told us how unsafe it was and that she had “only heard bad things about it.” I asked what the manager’s name was only to get “Bobby” as a response; no one knows his last name. I have stayed at hostels before. This was NOT a hostel. If for some untold reason you have to stay here, get vaccinated first.

I am not likely to return to the Columbus Studios Hotel.
I would not recommend it to friends.
