Cape Cod?s quintessential luxury seaside resort has been a renowned and beloved Cape Cod landmark since 1914. With one-quarter mile of the most spectacular private beach on Cape Cod, this grand oceanfront resort would be impossible to recreate today. The historic Main Inn offers luxuriously appointed guestrooms and private suites. Recently constructed cottages with luxurious bathrooms are nestled throughout the property most of which have balconies, decks or terraces with views of the Atlantic Ocean. The new spa suites, designed to facilitate in room treatments, provide an adults only sanctuary with easy access to the adjacent Spa and outdoor relaxation pool.

When I booked this place a few months ago, it looked like the perfect place for a week of R&R with my family. I knew it was expensive, and I have stayed at several other places on the Cape, so the price was just the price. Your dollar doesnt go as far on the Cape, but I believe that this place is the most expensive of them all. I really wanted this place to be the perfect place, but it was good and bad....here is what I found:
To start with, I liked:
1.) The pool---it is a great pool, heated because even in the summer it gets nippy at the coastline. The pool staff was great, we got waited on at the pool, food was decent, and not too pricey. It was probably our favorite thing about Chatham bars inn.
2.) The grounds--well taken care of, staff everywhere and always friendly, it does have a certain feel that makes one relax.
3.) The staff--overall they were all very nice and helpful, but not pushy. The concierge was friendly and helpful, with a wealth of information.
What I didnt like:
1.) The rooms are nice and somewhat elegant, but small if you are trying to fit a family of 4 in there. Also, we had a cottage room; these were advertised as being 'private' and out of the way, and quiet, but ours wasnt. These cottages are close together, and there are multiple units in a cottage, so one may be better off at the main in to play the lower price. Also, the cottages are not on the beach as the pictures suggest and as the advertising suggests....it was a walk to get anywhere from the cottage. we didnt like not knowing what cottage we had and then getting put a ways away from the Inn....but they dont tell you that in advance. ALso, how about a COFFEE machine in the room and not just a espresso machine? Most people dont do espresso, and I didnt like having to walk to the Inn to get a coffee in the morning.
2.) The Beach House Restaurant had issues---it was good food for the pool, but the clam bake was $78 per adult for a buffet--the food was good and the environment was good, but come on--$78 per person? On top of that if you want a coke it is extra....seemed like a bit of gouging going on there---I'm already paying $1k a night for a cottage---why keep going with this? On top of that, we had booked to be at a buffett on Friday night there, and when I checked on that Friday afternoon they told me that there was a wedding that night and that there would not be a buffet.....we had to change plans, as we were never notified of this change. We had booked it two weeks in advance...maybe some of that $78 per person could be used to better organize things and tell people when their reservations are unliaterally cancelled? Just a thought. It did not make our day though.
3.) Issue with housekeeping---overall they were good, but our housekeeper was European and did not understand or speak ANY english. So, when we asked her for more glasses for the room, she just shook her head now and gave us the look that she didnt understand us. So, we had to call the front desk. Not a huge deal, but I didnt like not being able to communicate AT ALL with ny housekeeper...again , for these prices?
Overall, I gave this place a 5.5 out of 10. We may come back, but there are other places on the Cape that are better all around and are somewhat cheaper........the cottages just are not private at all......
