Built in 1892 as a private home, and restored a century later, the Chateau Tivoli offers nine lavishly appointed rooms and suites. Step inside to enter a world of Victorian splendor, filled with hand-carved woodwork, crystal chandeliers, period wallpapers, and oriental rugs. Charm and color are what San Francisco is all about, and there is perhaps no inn more charming or more colorful than the city's most celebrated "painted lady", the Chateau Tivoli.

Stayed there in October, 2007. My advice if you are thinking about it dont. Sincere, well-meaning, honest staff thats the only thing good about the place. (Although there is no staff there after 7 at night so when our bed frame fell apart there was nothing to do but drag the mattress onto the floor.) The place is exceptionally noisy, old as in decrepit, and not particularly clean. If it were $100 a night cheaper, youd ignore all that. But for what they charge, it is unbelievably overpriced. They try to justify it by serving wine in the evening and trying to make breakfast on the weekend seem pretentious. You could take the money you are paying for the white table cloth and invest it in a good meal out, a decent bed, and a chance at a good nights sleep.
