Located just two and one half blocks from the beach, the beloved Chalfonte stretches an entire city block, boasting an expansive wrap-around porch lined with rocking chairs from which you can enjoy a nice book or sip a cool cocktail from the famous King Edward Bar. Guests of the hotel are also preview to one of the most fantastic views in the city from our third floor cupola. The Chalfonte Hotel is considered the oldest operating hotel on the East Coast. Each guest room is unique in furnishings and design providing a summer cottage feel. Rooms are cooled by modified air conditioning and ceiling fans. Our legendary Magnolia Room restaurant serves a sumptuous buffet breakfast from 8:30AM to 10:00AM and a fixed price four-course dinner from 6:00PM to 9:00PM. Known for its southern-style cuisine, the Magnolia Room is host to family style dining at its best. The King Edward Bar is open from 5:00PM to 1:00AM and is known as Cape May's best kept secret. Guests enjoy a nice wine and beer selection as well as signature cocktails. Friday, Saturday and Sunday feature a Still Life of Cheese from 5:00PM to 8PM. A truly gourmet experience of select imported cheeses and olives, all to experience and enjoy with our compliments. The Chalfonte is a rich study of community and tradition, featuring nightly entertainment and monthly art exhibits. It is more than a typical hotel, the Chalfonte is a cultural experience.

Good
The staff is wonderful and work diligently to meet every request in a timely fashion.
The hotel is old and not sound proof. If you are a light sleeper you can hear people in the hall all night. Also, if you don't like walking down the hall...

The Magnolia room is the restaurant inside the Chalfonte Hotel one of the biggest and best hotels in Cape May. This is a can't miss and if you don't stay here you should at least take the tour of the hotel. The Magnolia room offers great food,...

The Chalfonte was a wonderful retreat to get away from the daily grind. I have stayed here two separate occasions and had a wonderful experience during both. The architecture of the B&B's in Cape May are a must see as well as the quaint town. ...

Good
The Chalfonte is not the place for everyone -- thankfully!
If you are seeking well appointed, metropolitan rooms with all the bells and whistles -- forget the Chalfonte -- Cape May probably isn't for you either. Try Avalon!
I found the Chalfonte a great place to stay. It is very quaint and charming with an extrodinary rich history. Dot and Lucille the world renound chefs; really know how to cook and their food was superb. It was done in southern style. I went to the...
First, I agree with other reviewers who have written that this is not a five star hotel. This hotel does have its charms but it is a grand dame in need of more than a fresh coat of paint and the occasional patch up job. A better bed or at least a...

Excellent
I found this Hotel-- a Guest House actually--on an online travel website. It wasn't rated, but I needed a place for a spur of the moment beach weekend, and took a chance. I recommend the hotel for single person because there is plenty of space to be ...
We stayed one night on our way to DC. It was a great expericece. If you are looking for 5 star, this place is not for you. We loved the kids having dinner in the kids room, while we ate in the main room. We would go back again.

Horrible
I was told the Magnolia Room was a great southern fine dining experience. The people who tout such lingo must be ignorant. I took my mother, father, wife and daughter to the Magnolia Room for Mothers' Day 2005. It was an absolute failure from ...

Mediocre
Our family of 4 ( with 2 daughters ages 7 and 10) went to the Chalfonte for dinner this summer during our vacation in Cape May. We had made a reservation for 6:30pm at 5:30pm that same day. We arrived at 6:25 and waited over an hour to be seated! ...
