HOTEL
MANAGEMENT General Manager Mr. Mike Staples
OPENING DATE 1958
HISTORY The hotel and its surrounding area was originally the summer estate of the Scripps family, better known as Braemar. Mrs. Scripps, Matriarch of the family, envisioned a simple but elegant home, a place where the family could enjoy wonderful ocean breezes and comfortable starry nights. The family eventually abandoned their summer estate in late 1955, and it was sold. In 1958, Mr. William D. Evans acquired the property and began construction of what would become the Catamaran Resort Hotel. Initially the resort was a modest 82-room Inn.
The original décor was a Spanish motif. However, the Spanish decor did not create the type of atmosphere the Evans family was looking for. Mr. and Mrs. Evans wanted an atmosphere where the landscape was the emphasis of beauty. They wanted the buildings to act as a frame around a picturesque landscape. After much deliberation a tropical theme was decided upon as the main motif.
DESIGN When looking at the main buildings, you will notice that the architecture is heavy on the bottom and light on the top. This is typical colonial Hawaiian architecture. The entire hotel is filled with authentic pieces from the South Pacific. For example the Black Koa Wood that the front desk is made of is a special rare wood that is only native to the Tahitian islands, there are numerous artifacts and jewelry from Papua New Guinea, handcrafted stone imported from deep in the heart of, Mexico, and Mahogany from Honduras is used in all of window and door frames.
Evans family has gone to great lengths to import traditional ethnic pacific island art. All of the art was made prior to World War II and collected from 1950 - 1960. If you are interested in more information please contact the hotel.

37 year old female with a luxury budget, traveling for leisure
I loved that the place was very very clean. I am kinda a clean freak and always take clorox wipes to a hotel to wipe down the bathroom, remote, etc. I wiped the bathroom floor and tub with wipes and they stayed white the room was that clean. Very pretty grounds and rooms.
We had a couple minor problems the first couple rooms we tried were one on ground floor in the tower and we didn't like the fact that it had a patio door (the patio doors didn't seem very secure) so we asked for a higher room and that patio door didn't shut all the way. The staff was great!! They let us change for a third time to the 5th floor (no view) but still great room and then the door shut and we felt more secure.
Another suggestion - GO to the Front Desk RIGHT away if you do not rent a car. They have a GREAT trolley that tours many many places and is dirt cheap. But it is not advertised you have to ask. Just like the city bus is really really close and easy but not advertised just ask the front desk though and they have a great sheet that tells where and when each bus leaves.
