44 year old woman with a moderate budget, traveling for business
I picked this excuse of a hotel as it was located near a conference i was attending. I have stayed in countless hotels from luxury to no frills budget and believe me this is just a completely filthy disgusting place. The room was completely unclean with crusty carpets, unknown stains, thicky crusty material covering all the radiators and the ac unit. Walls were covered with god knows what. There was not hot water and the bathroom was so revolting i stood on a towel to have a freezing shower. There was no heating so i slept fully clothed. I did get bitten on my hand and face and i presume this is from bedbugs attacking the only bit of me exposed !My key for the room never worked and the staff just didnt seem to care. Of course there are countless people at the reception desk complaining all the time so i guess they are used to it. The hotel has its own distinctive smell which makes you feel nauseous.
I am actually in the medical profession and it is the only hotel i have stayed in where i felt it could seriously damage your health. If there is going to be a fire, carbon monoxide poisoning, legionella's disease, scabies, TB, asthma attacks- this is the sort of place its going to happen in! i have already contacted the New York State Health dept. Interestingly this hotel is owned by a Vietnemese billionaire (Tran Dinh Truong) - it is just an absolute joke!

Let's start with the positives. Fabulous/Amazing location! Very friendly doormen and staff. 3 working elevators. CHEAP! They don't charge for latecheck out within reason. Clean sheets. Now for the not so great. The only thing in the room that was clean were the sheets. FILTHY! We bought cleaner and cleaned the bathroom, although the real problem is that nothing drains properly in NYC. Had to run the A/C and open the window the whole time to counter act the heat (March). No doorknob on bathroom. Faucet knobs in tub not attached. Took smoke detector to lobby to ask for battery and never saw it again. That's what you get for $100 per night. I'd stay there again.
I am
somewhat likely
to return to the Carter Hotel.
I
would not recommend it to
friends.

A vast improvement on the Waldorf!!!

35 year old man with a luxury budget, traveling for business
Having recently returned from a stay at the Hotel Carter 243 W43rd st. i have to say that my experience simply could not have been improved upon. On a prior visit to the supremely wonderful Metropolis that is New York, i had the misfortune to stay at the Waldorf Astoria Central Park West. I found the concierge to be cringingly nice, asking me if he could help me with my luggage, in that outrageously over the top 'i'm only doing this for a generous tip' kind of manner. Upon reaching the reception i was accosted by an array of fake smiles, forcing me to have to swiftly deploy the Ray Bans, and on reaching my room i was subjected to chapter and verse on how 'This remote control operates the lighting and this one adjusts the springs in the mattress and another one creates an ambient mood with music' obviously lifted from some poorly directed insanely expensive hollywood epic!!.....Needless to say all this unnecessary over-indulgence in what ultimately were four walls within which i would sleep for 8hrs or so, and as the word sleep suggests, my eyes would be closed preventing me seeing all this madness that i was having to remortgage the Manor house in-order to experience, when my funds could have been much better spent in one of the many fine establishments that adorn 5th ave. So in finding the Hotel Carter, i was relieved and delighted to have found an absolutely splendid 'no bullshit' Hotel at the heart of Times Sq and Broadway, that offered me the same aforementioned 8hrs sleep, and yet still managed to respect my desire to utilize my very substantial funds enjoying the sights, sounds and smells of my beloved New York City!!!
Sparkling form
Awesome!!!!!
Sincerely,
Carstairs.
