86, when Goethe was on his first journey to Italy and had his lunch in the inn. A big oil-painting in the hotel hall showing Goethe talking to the son of the host depicts this event. Four years later Goethe returned again for two days in company of Archduchess Amalia of Saxony-Weimar. The "Goethestube" later became a meeting point for Tyrolean poets, painters and musicians. The Best Western Goldener Adler also played an important role in the Tyrolean fights for liberty in 1809. The national hero Andreas Hofer had his residence here after his first victory over Napoleon's troups. On August 15, 1809 he held an encouraging speech to the citizens of Innsbruck: "I will not leave you alone, as sure as my name is Andreas Hofer! Now I have told you, now you have seen me, God help you!" After this tempestuous era peace returned again and with it contemplative times for the inn. King Ludwig II of Bavaria came to stay here as a guest for various times as well as some other famous personality of the world of sciences and arts. In 1828 for example the marvellous violonist Paganini stayed overnight and wrote his name on one of the windows of his room. One of the first writers to describe the Tyrol, the Englishman H.D. Inglis, got into the Best Western Goldener Adler by mistake during his visit to Innsbruck - but he did not regret it! Decades came and passed and with them numerous guests. The marble plate on the outside of the inn gives testimony of them. But time does not stop in front of modern necessities and growing demands. This was the reason why the Best Western Goldener Adler was totally renewed on the occasion of its 600th anniversary. Great consideration was taken to see that modern comfort was connected harmonically with the long tradition of the inn.
