Upfront, if you pay attention, you know this is not going to be the Ritz or a big-city Westin, but it's a bargain. 500 West is an historic remodeled version of an Armed Services (residential) YMCA built in 1924. It still has a YMCA and a nice cafe attached. The lobby is lovely, with many old features of decoration still present. Large sepia photos of the hotel in 1920s adorn lobby walls, and the staff is impeccably polite and attentive. WARNING: shared bath facilities (I'll describe below) are not for everyone, and some rooms here face to the street, which means street noise at certain times of day. Total about 225 rooms. Windows open but there's no A/C, not usually an issue in San Diego. If you are coming on Amtrak, shopping or going to the ballet or opera and desire a very central location near Gaslamp and excellent public transport, this is perfect as long as you are OK with the bath setup.

LOVED: (a) central location: a block from Amtrak, a few blocks from Horton Plaza and from the Civic Center, and the trolley; (b) quick check in; (c) very numerous bathrooms, some with shower and some without, accessed by room key, privacy assured by deadbolting from inside. I found the bathrooms well-stocked with face cloths and toilet paper, and always available (d) excellent price, I paid $49+ tax for a single 5/4/08; there's a really nasty, smelly Super8 not far away for which you will pay $80 or more (e) free wireless. The old building lobby is graceful and has preserved many original features. The rooms are tiny, like New York hotel rooms, and the bedding spare but comfortable. In my room there was no chair, so I pulled out the desk drawer and parked my laptop open in the drawer, and sat on the end of the bed. There was a micro-fridge under the desk.

POTENTIALLY IRRITATING: (a) no drinking cups; (b) bathrooms grouped by 4s in several locations on each floor [if you need to get up at night to use the bathroom, take a container to use in the room or take pajamas--the shared bathrooms would irritate some but worked for me]; (b) two PAY computers off lobby, irritant to pay 70 cents for two minutes in a credit card transaction to print a paper airline boarding pass (c) slow drain in one shower room, which could have irritated a user just after me; (d) some guests left deadbolt on bathroom shot out, so the door remained unlocked and accessible to anyone who cares to use it, which could include passersby or homeless; this is a guest-education and security issue. Only closing the door secures it, then requiring a room key to enter. (e) There's no A/C, not usually a problem in San Diego. There's a tiny ceiling fan and I opened the window, but doing so exposes you to some street noise. Ask for a room that faces the interior court, not a street (f) all the surrounding areas are home to homeless, who seem to appear everywhere, sometimes drunk or acting strangely but not panhandling aggressively as in San Francisco.

When you check in, the staff makes sure (by asking you) that you understand and are OK with the shared-bath, hostel-type concept. It's also made very clear on the hotel's web site.

I am very likely to return to the 500 West Hotel.
I would definitely recommend it to friends.

GOOD:

- Weekly price only $275!

- Clean

- Helpful (the front desk offered to change room when I mentioned noise)

- Fitness Center

- Free Internet

- Small fridge in room

- Close to downtown

So-so:

- Share Kitchen

- Bathroom/Shower not attached to bedroom

BAD:

- NO Air Conditioner in room

- VERY small room

- VERY small TV (it's a 17 inch computer monitor type)

- Stiff Bed

- No chair in room

- Noisy (in warm weather, since no AC, I have to open the window but the window is facing Broadway, one of the major street in Downtown)

- Can't sleep in late (relating to above point, if you have to open the open, you can't close the blinds, hence morning light will wake you up)

I am not likely to return to the 500 West Hotel.
I would not recommend it to friends.

33 year old man with a moderate budget, traveling for business

I was kind of scared when I found out the hotel was a hybrid between a hotel and a hostel, but 500 west exceeded many expectations. I was there attending a conference at the convention center and to do some sight seeing.

The Location is Excellent the trolley which will take you all over was around the corner a block and half away. You have a Seven Eleven one block away for snacks and other needs. You are a short walk away from 5th Ave with all the eating places are and you can also take the trolley there as well. A few blocks away from Horton Plaza Mall. Several fast food places a few blocks away (Wendy's Baja Fresh, Fuddruckers, Horton Plaza Food Court, etc...)

Safe and clean area of downtown

Price was extremely affordable at about $60 per night compared to $200 and $300 per night within same area.

Cleanliness Room was nice the pictures the post are not quite exactly the same but still very clean and you have a small TV on the desk and FREE INTERNET ACCESS (a big plus)

Bathrooms where always clean they are down the hallway and never had a problem getting into them or waiting for there use.

Laundry room came in very handy with washer and dyer (coin operated) available on the floor. Vending machines available with reasonable prices plus one with popcorn, lean pockets, and other snacks that can be prepared in the kitchen on the floor that has a complete stove and microwave.

If you're looking for a cheap place to sleep so you can spend your other money on tour or sightseeing or attending a convention I would Highly Recommend.

Stay Away

28 year old man with a moderate budget, traveling for business

I recently spent 5 nights at the 500 West. Until this hotel cleans up its hallways, elevators, bathrooms, and homeless policies, I'll never suggest it to anyone. I was attracted to the place because of the low rates, but I would have much rather spent twice as much if it meant actually sleeping peacefully. The street noise kept me up at night, as did non-guests sauntering through the hallways asking for money.

The bathrooms were disgusting. I was so happy to make it home to take a real shower to clean off the 500 West nasties!

By the way, it's not really in the heart of the gas lamp district as they advertise.

Stay away!

This hotel's location is awesome. Two blocks from Horton Plaza, the gas lamp district, the trolley stop, minutes from the airport, Anthony's Fish Grotto and Petco Park. The room was small but pretty clean for the place being so old. Perfect place just to crash. The bathroom situation was okay. They had plenty of them available. We didn't have to wait. The only complaints I have are that they don't have toliet seat covers (so bring your own) and I wish that they would have spent some of the renovation money on redoing the showers because they are pretty icky, really old tile and grout. Oh bring some earplugs too. The housekeepers make a lot of noise in the morning and the street traffic is pretty loud. I would stay there again for the great location. Most of the staff were pretty friendly.
