This hotel was great except that they charge you just for making the reservation. So, at check-out, I paid for the hotel room (which was reasonably priced) but then also had to pay for a "reservation fee" that came without any notice. A hotel that

I stayed at this hotel on business this week. Don't let the hip lobby look full you. Managers are incompetent and don't know how to say they are sorry after inconveniencing guests - especially their night manager. I had to move once (at midnight) because the elevator noise was too loud and again after the next room they put me in smelled like a Lysol can exploded in it (which aggravated my asthma). I had to beg for an upgrade - no offer to do this, nor an apology. I discussed my unhappiness with an assistant manager at check out, who has yet to followup with me 4 days later to explain how Westin SF was going to make this up to me. Stay away from all rooms next to the elevators. And avoid this hotel.

I had a great time at the Westin on Market Street. The hotel employees were very nice, the room was large for a brand new hotel and the room service was fast and efficient.
I would tell a friend to stay there, I was close to the Ritz Carlton and I felt I was in a hotel with the same category.

Stayed here for a long weekend Nov 2008.

Stayed here for a long weekend Nov 2008. Wanted something upscale for a special trip to SF. This hotel missed the mark. Staff was indifferent and cold. Booked a deluxe room, but received an odd corner room - everything at angles and little more than a half bath. Worse yet, room was on 9th floor facing an adjacent building on an alley - no sunlight and certainly no views. If that's not enough, parking was a fortune, and the traffic on 3rd St was heavy - constant congestion. Friends stayed at the Hyatt in Embarcadero - paid same price as we did at Westin - their room was on 15th floor with a balcony and views of the bay. Bottom line - stay any place but here, unless you're on an expense account and the location suits you. Would not return and would not recommend. Very dissatisfied.

The Westin San Francisco Market Street

The Westin San Francisco Market Street is a quality hotel from what was the luxury Argent Hotel. The room was on the small side, with a large soft, comfortable bed, LCD TV, radio, coffeemaker, hair dryer. These high end rate rooms typically gouge wherever, whenever they can and do. The shower has two shower heads, unusual but nice spray of two heads. Also, I noticed that warm or hot water is always available within a couple of seconds, another nice touch. The room itself is quite nice with a desktop and office chair, but no other chairs for any guests. Electrical power plugs are along near the top edge of the desktop area, a nice touch. Nice view out the window, though the windows need cleaning. Here's where the gouging kicks in. Refrigerator extra charge, high speed internet $14.95 a day, phone use $1 for the first 15 minutes, and continues to add up the longer you're on the line, including toll free 800 calls. There's a health facility on the premises. Dogs under 40 pounds are allowed after signing a waiver and be responsible for excessive damage or cleaning required. The location is great, right in downtown, close to BART, MUNI, Financial Disstrict, Contemporary Jewish Museum, Museum of Modern Art, AMC Loews Metreon 16.There was no newspaper left by the door for two days, we inquired at the front desk, mentioned we prefered the local paper The Chronicle. The next few days, The Wall Street Journal, USA Today, and The Chronicle appeared except on the day of checkout, no newspaper again. They will hold your luggage, but will not be liable stated on the claim check.A large grocery store at Howard and 6th Streets is open till 9pm. Or a convenience store 7-11 up on Market St and turn left is open 24 hours.

Great location. If you go for the breakfast, stick with the buffet. We didn't and the food was cold and didn't get enough for the high price tag. They seem to cater more to the buisness guest on expense accounts.
Left an expensive camera in the nightstand. Was relieved to hear no one else checked in after me. However, the cleaning lady said she didn't find it... so I contacted security who promised to question her and get back to me. I'm still waiting.... Loved San Fran but wouldn't go back to the Westin on market.

Info on parking, restaurants, etc. (long)

My visit to SF included excursions to Yosemite, Marin County, and Big Sur, so I rented a car. The parking situation near the Westin was far easier than I had feared. The hotel charges about $45-$50 per day for valet parking, but not to worry -- there are two huge parking decks directly across 3rd Avenue from the hotel. 3rd Avenue is a busy one-way street with 3-4 lanes. Jaywalking is easy, but to cross to the hotel legally, you have to walk 1/2 a block to a crosswalk, then another 1/2 block back up to the entrance. Definitely worth a little extra effort to save the money, IMO.

Hearst Parking Center is recognizable as having an Office Depot and California Pizza Kitchen at its ground level. It charges $20 per 24 hours, and there was plenty of availability every day I was there. The only downside of Hearst is that it doesn't open until 6 a.m. Monday-Saturday, and not until 10:00 a.m. on Sunday. You can't get your car out of the deck when it's closed, so beware if you have an early flight out of town.

Just across the alley from Hearst is Tower Valet. Tower charges $21/day and is open 24/7. The downside is that their "day" resets every morning at 6:00 a.m. So for example, if you park there at noon on day 1, you have to have your car out by 6:00 a.m. on day 2 to limit the charge to $21. It also appeared to have PLENTY of available spaces.

I street parking is free in most areas of the city on Sunday. I parked on the street Sunday night about 2 blocks away from the Westin without any problem. Just make sure you don't park on a curb that is scheduled for a street sweeper overnight.

As for restaurant recommendations, Pazzia is a small family-owned Italian Restaurant about 2-3 blocks toward AT&T park from the Westin. The food was very good, plentiful, and less than $20 per entree. They also do take-out orders. Chaat Cafe serves Indian food, also very good and about $10-$12 per dish.

On the same block with the Westin is a Subway, Quizno's, California Pizza Kitchen, and a liquor store.

The hotel was nice too. Heavenly beds are as good as advertised.
