The room we were given had a faulty toilet in an adjacent room going off every 15 seconds. could not sleep. Hotel personal knew of problem when they finally came to my room, desk person said they were not going to fix or even find the problem. Manager refused to see for himself or acknowledge my complaint and avoided the front desk when I went down. Would have refunded my money right then as I packed up but desk girl discovered I went through travel website they said the refund was my problem.

Older building that is kept up well. Rooms were a nice size with tiny bathrooms. Avoid room 214, as it is above a restaurant that stays open until 4am. Great value for an expensive city. Parking is extra(AAA discount)

We recently stayed at this hotel for two nights. While the free continental breakfast left much to be desired, the hotel was very well kept and the staff were attentive, helpful, and very friendly. I just loved the look of the hotel -- old style San Francisco; classy and classic. It seemed to be more of a hotel for business travelers, however we did stay there with our toddler and everything was fine. Parking at the hotel is expensive, however that can be expected for San Francisco!

Very nice old hotel. The rooms were small, but clean. The bedding seemed new. The hotel sign was right outside of our window. It was lit all the time, but the shades in the room blocked out the light at night. The continental breakfast was adequate. The bus line was right outside of the front door. The consierge's were very helpful.

Since travel is far behind buying

Since travel is far behind buying techie toys and music gear in my priorities, I try to stay at less expensive hotels when they appear from my cross - checking of Ratings and Reviews, to be clean, well-maintained (even if not shiny new) and have good service. My sweetie and I relate to the room more as a detail than an important part of our vacation to someplace we want to enjoy. The Opal is ideally located for driving or using SF's excellent public transit to get to the majority of museums, theater, and shopping districts. Parking at Opal is $$ (total) per night, but would be more than that in public and private parking lots. On our last day in SF, as we were checking out around 11:00AM, we asked if we could leave the car parked there(gratis) while we walked to Union Square, about 7 blocks away, to shop and eat. The desk clerk cheerfully OK'd that, then instantly showed us the best walking and bus routes before we could even ask him about them. We felt like he actually enjoyed helping us have a great time.
Our low(est) end room was small and smelled of smoke. This was OK tho', since I'm a smoker and had requested a smoking room. Bed was comfy and Wi-Fi hook-up was smooth. Some staff more cheerful than others, but all totally helpful and at least polite. Next time we visit SF, we'll stay at The Opal, and if we want better acommodations, I imagine the better rooms in the Opal will suffice.

Fresh clean towels and sheet daily.Carpet is old and dirty, room and bathroom corners are dirty, room is super small with lots of noise from elevator and entrance, no view.“Carpet is old and dirty, room and bathroom corners are dirty, room is super small with lots of noise from elevator and entrance, not to mention the room has no view-it's facing the patio on the first floor where people walk in and out.”

The front desk staff was helpful and friendly. The bed was so uncomfortable, I tossed and turned all night. The measly pillows on the bed were useless.“We arrived and had to be buzzed in but that made us feel like not just anybody could come into the lobby which was nice. The front desk was very helpful and nice, making small talk and joking. The room was clean and the size was nice. Bathroom was tiny and towels thin. The bed was one of the worst I have slept on. Worse than hostel beds in central America. The room had a very strong cleaning product smell to it.”

Very central location in SF. Easy

Very central location in SF. Easy access to major bus thorough fares to get anywhere in the city.Despite its central location, there is very little of interest within a quick walk of the hotel.“The hotel is a down-to-earth tourist-oriented hotel. Our 3rd floor room with a king bed overlooked Van Ness Ave. but was quiet and comfortable. Nothing luxurious. Reminiscent of the types of hotels my wife and I like to stay in while in Europe. Basic Continental breakfast with yummy coffee. The location in San Francisco is very central, with easy access to bus lines going North-South along Van Ness, and East-West along Geary or O'Farrell. That said, there is very little of interest in the immediate vicinity of the hotel, so plan to drive (gasp), take the bus, or a long walk if you want to get to Downtown, North Beach, Chinatown, Golden Gate Park, Fisherman's Wharf, the Mission, etc. Be aware also that the most direct route between the hotel and Downtown is straight through the Tenderloin not recommended, especially at night. We know San Francisco very well, so we knew what we were getting into. For the purpose of this particular trip (Outside Lands Festival in Golden Gate Park), the location was fine for us.”
