I went to Chicago for the first time

I went to Chicago for the first time with my young daughters. The hotel was great. Concierge was awesome. ONE MESSAGE FOR ALL HOTELS: We should ALL be DEMANDING that ALL HOTELS wash ALL bedding after EACH visit. I always toss top duvet/quilt covers in the closet and don't use them. YUCK.

A great weekend getaway!

We're from Chicago suburbs and enjoyed a weekend getaway, April, 2007. Our upgraded room overlooked Navy Pier, Lake Michigan, and the Chicago River. A building divided the view between Navy Pier and more of the Lake, but the view was still spectacular!

Pointers:
1. Reposition the love seat and coffee table so you can sit and peer out the window at the beautiful view. (If you have an upgraded room.)

2. If you're getting a "package," choose the wine and cheese over the chocolate and champagne. Our package included the wine and cheese. The wine (red) was a regular-sized bottle and of high quality and the cheese platter was creative, yummy, and beautiful. It included a honey-liquid for dipping and a fig paste to add sweetness. (We first received by mistake the strawberries and chocolate with bottle of champagne. This was nothing special. The 5 strawberries were wilted, the champagne was only a small bottle, and there were only 4 small chocolates. I'm sure the chocolate for dipping was delicious but we had them replace this all with the wine and cheese we were expecting.)

3. The front desk has a variety of games, including Scrabble, Connect Four, and Cranium.

4. If the bathroom counter space doesn't offer you enough room, move all the coffee items into your room for extra space.

5. If you want peanut M&M's, you can get them for 75 cents from the garage level canteen machine (where you wait for them to bring your car). Otherwise you'll pay $3 from the in-room refrigerator, which is worth the convenience if you didn't purchase candy ahead-of-time. (Other in-room refrigerator items I remember: Kit Kat, reg. M&M's, Famous Amos choco-chip cookies, all kinds of mini- liquor bottles, all sorts of cans of pop, small first-aid kit and then some.)

6. Bring bottled water, if you can. You'll pay $5 for the in-room bottles, but the bottles are big.

7. If you don't like crowds, ask if there's a conference scheduled for when you plan to be there. The hotel became uncomfortably crowded on the Sunday of our stay due to conferences.

Dining
8a. The burger restaurant was fabulous! One burger is enough to share. Lots of fun toppings!

8b. Shula's, their steak house, is quite pricey.

8c. Riverside Cafe. Casual setting, I think only breakfast and lunch, not dinner. If you get there at around 11a.m., that's when they change breakfast buffet to lunch buffet. (I think that's when it was-you can call to be sure.) Our package included breakfast only but they allowed us to enjoy both buffets due to the timing. Breakfast buffet included fresh egg-white omelet with veggies and the lunch buffet included lots of leafy greens and rolled spinach tortillas stuffed with grilled veggies. It also included whole chicken breasts. There was more too. It was all excellent!

8d. PJ's for dinner (and maybe lunch) is right across the street at Embassy Suites Hotel. The meatloaf sandwich was fab (real comfort food!) and so was the choco-chip sundae.

8e. If you want some really decadent desserts the Dominicks across the street has a marvelous bakery. (It's a full-fledged grocery store, so they have everything there.)

9. The Chi bar offers mini desserts in shot glasses. All contain liquor, except the key lime pie, which is excellent.

9. Expect excellent, friendly service at the Chicago Sheraton. Everyone was friendly and helpful. What a pleasure!

I stood in line 20 minutes to check in

I stood in line 20 minutes to check in after coming back because the line was too long the first time. The ice machine didn't work, fridge in the room and fan in the shower didn't work, the complimentary breakfast was gone and not restocked even though they were open for another hour. Sheraton really needs to up their game. On a positive note, the beds were comfortable and the room was clean. If we didn't get such a great rate, I'd be furious.

The hotel is a bit rundown. Location is good. Parking expensive. Bed too hard. Pillows flat and scratchy. Employees friendly and helpful. Couldn't get two rooms on same floor with 2 beds in each as promised.

The fees charged for the business center and the workout facilities seemed ridiculously high, especially compared to other hotels of this class. The restaurant menu was very limited in the grill downstairs. The atmosphere was very pleasant and it was a very convenient location.

It was centrally located to other tourist attractions and it was easy to navigate the building.

It is generally a very nice place to stay. We did have trouble with the valet parking. It is extremely expensive and it took over a half hour to get our car. I would not recommend valet but would go with self-park next time!
