Felt like we were living in Lucy and Ricky's apt. - while charming, the general decor could use some sprucing up. The doormen are great at recommending neighborhood restaurants and shops. The kitchen was terrific to have (save some money on lighter meals).Comfortable, quiet, large room (small bathroom), helpful and concerned staff. Would definitely stay again!

I was amazed at how large the studio room was. The bathroom was very clean, no mildew. The carpet was a bit worn, but seemed to be clean. The bed was very comfortable, although I did not spend much time in it. The hotel was in a very quiet location, but very close to main attractions in New York. It was about 4-5 blocks from Grand Central Station and about 5-6 blocks from Empire State Building. It was so quiet at night and my friend and I were able to get sleep. I would definately recommend this hotel as a great place to stay!

I stayed here in April with my 10 year

I stayed here in April with my 10 year old goddaughter. We reserved a one-bedroom suite.

When we arrived, there was a problem, and they put us in a studio suite-- which was fine-- the next night we moved to the bigger room.

Everything is slightly run-down, the carpets and paint jobs, etc, but in New York, I'd rather have a lot of space and a little shab than a slick room where I can't even put my suitcase down without standing on the bed. We definitely had the space.

We had prepaid and booked through a consolidator, so they could not refund us any cash for the night in the smaller room, but they did give us credit, which we used for room service breakfast. (Very fancy to the 10 year old.)

Overall, the location is great, but the service was a little poky. We sat around waiting for our luggage to get to the room, and then when we moved rooms, again they did not move our luggage in a particularly timely way, and one night (it was April, but 30 degrees out) we requested another blanket. (The sofabed had been made up with just a thin blanket and not the nice duvets the regular beds have) and we were told they had none! I complained a few more times, and about two hours later, they brought another blanket.

So-- it was a little funky, but I would still stay there again if I got a deal through a consolidator.

When selecting our hotels for New York

When selecting our hotels for New York City, JSIndygirl and I quickly learned that the quickest option bay far was to book one night at a time using Hotwire or Priceline. We got very lucky, ending up with two great hotels. One was the Westin Times Square, featuring one of the best rooms I&#146ve ever stayed in. The other was the Shelburne Murray Hill which, while not as blatantly elegant as the Westin, proved to be an excellent place to stay for our first night in the city.

As its name suggests, the Shelburne sits in the middle of the Murray Hill neighborhood of Manhattan. Located at Lexington and 37th, this hotel makes a convenient starting point for exploring neighborhoods in the mid and southern portions of Manhattan. The hotel is very close to the Empire State Building and within easy walking distance of many places to eat, drink, and explore in Chelsea and Greenwich. We enjoyed a scenic walk to our lunch at Otto Pizzeria in West Village and took a short stroll the next morning to get a delicious New York bagel.

The Shelburne is part of the Affinia chain of hotels which has five or six locations in New York and Chicago only. When doing our initial research, we noticed that all the hotels in this brand were very highly rated on review web sites and were thus pleased to end up with one. The standard room we had at this hotel normally costs $220, but we saved around $70 by booking with Priceline and bidding $150.

Check-In and Public Areas
We arrived at the hotel a couple hours before our scheduled check-in time and were greeted by a bellman in a top hat. At the front desk we were told we could have a smoking room immediately. Although neither of us smoke, the ability to stow our bags far outweighed the potential of a smoky room.

The Shelburne is a small boutique hotel but still boasts several amenities. It has a small but attractive lobby sitting area. Its leather seating and bright colors give it a modern look and feel. A large television is built directly into the wall and constantly plays the news. The Shelburne also has an in-hotel restaurant called Rare. If we hadn&#146t already had our meals planned, I would have been tempted to dine at Rare due to its focus on gourmet burgers. The restaurant and bar both looked basic but attractive. I understand that a rooftop garden is open seasonally for food and drink.

The Room
We piled into the small elevators, which were a bit shaky but did manage to get us to point B. Our room at the Shelburne was basic and showed its age a bit but still generally clean and pleasant. We had a lot of floor space in the bedroom, which included a desk, chair, television, and truly amazing bed. This bed gave us a much-needed fabulous night of sleep. Neither of us felt the other move all night! No bed we stayed in before or after on our trip even came close to living up to the comfort we enjoyed at the Shelburne Murray Hill.

Our room also had an antiquated kitchenette. This included the world&#146s smallest stove, a wee little fridge, and a microwave. Personally, I do not ever see an in-room kitchenette as a plus. Why would I cook on vacation? In New York City, particularly, such a feature seems totally impractical. Where would I get things to cook even if I wanted to cook? Is anyone really making soup at the Shelburne Murray Hill? JSIndygirl and I joked that instead of meeting DavidManning for dinner as planned, we should have him over for a home-cooked meal. To me, an in-room kitchenette is one more thing to keep clean and I worry that it invites bugs. Even if I did like in-room kitchenettes, I do not feel that this particular one would be a fine example, as everything looked a little...old and small.

We also had a wee little bathroom. Other than one errant black hair that I promptly wiped up and flushed down the toilet so as not to concern JSIndygirl, it seemed pretty clean. We had no problems with water temperature and pressure. The Shelburne Murray Hill does provide some toiletries. A word of warning, though &#150 these musky man-smelling toiletries are the stinkiest I&#146ve ever experienced. After using them, I sort of felt I had been better off before showering.

Stink. Stank. Stunk.
Generally, things were going rather well at the Shelburne Murray Hill until we returned from touring in the afternoon of our first day. At that point, we noticed a terrible, awful odor in the hallway of the seventh floor, leading to our room. I have never smelled anything quite like this. Skunk came to mind, as did gas leak, body odor, and sewage. The smell lingered that day and the next and seemed to intensify. It also seemed change subtly, becoming bad in a different way each time we walked through it.

We had to walk through the hallway between six and eight times in our comings and goings, so this did actually have quite a bit of effect on my attitude toward this hotel. Honestly, the smell made me want to vomit and the hotel loses at least a star just because of it. At one point in the morning, as we were waiting for an empty elevator to take us down, I said that the hotel's star rating was falling right as we waited simply because of the total nastiness of the odor surrounding us.

Overall&#133
I didn&#146t dislike my stay at the Shelburne Murray Hill. The location was ideal and the price pretty decent. The bed was second to none. However, the smell in the hallway was truly terrible, and the room had a few minor issues. Without the stench I would have given the hotel 4 stars and gladly recommended it. With it, though, I have to go with a rating of 3.5 (rounded down to three) and say that I hope the Shelburne buys a bottle of Febreeze, ASAP. It&#146s too bad a perfectly good hotel experience was brought down by a stinky hallway.

Fantastic hotel close to lots of Manhattan tourist attractions. Big bedroom with 2 really comfy queen beds. Clean bathroom and small kitchen both adequate for a short stay. Safe deposit box in room, plus hairdryer and huge TV. Fantastic roof-top views of Empire State Building and Chrysler Building. Very friendly and helpful staff. Will most certainly return. It felt totally safe, no problems. Thank you for a great stay.

On a recent trip to NYC, chelledun and I spent our first night in the city at the Shelburne Murray Hill in the Murray Hill neighborhood of NYC. The Shelburne Murray Hill is an Affinia hotel and is located at the intersection of 37th and Lexington on the east side of the middle of Manhattan. The hotel has a nice lobby that is not fancy but is very serviceable. Directly off of the main check in area the hotel has a comfortable waiting area complete with flat screen TV and comfortable couches.

Our check in went very smoothly and we were able to check in early which is always a big plus. The common areas of the hotel are plain but clean and well lit. I only had one major complaint about the common areas and the hotel in general - the absolutely horrid stench in the hall way leading to our room. To be frank, it smelled like a dead skunk. AND to make matters worse, the smell kept getting worse as our stay progressed. It was a very strong and very powerful smell and really detracted from our overall hotel experience.

Our room was large, particularly for an urban hotel room and came with a very comfortable king sized bed, large window with a view of a city garden, dated bathroom, and small mini kitchen. The bed was perhaps the most comfortable bed I have ever slept in and I am kicking myself for not checking to see what kind of mattress they used. The bathroom was clean but older and a little small. The kitchen was a surprise and had a mini fridge, stove, sink, microwave, and coffee maker. The room also had a large ironing board and iron and hair dryer.

In addition to the bed, the main sleeping room also had a table, desk, night stand, and large television. The room was nicely decorated and very quiet. We had very little noise from other rooms, hallways, or outside. Overall, it provided a nice quiet home base for us as we explored the city.

Services and amenities offered at the hotel include: room service, grocery shopping service, concierge service, high speed wireless internet, voicemail service, and fitness center. Also - the Shelburne Murray Hill is pet friendly!!!

This is a very nice affordable option in New York City. We payed approximately $150 for the room on hotwire, however, the room generally costs around $220 - still a very good deal. The hotel was clean, safe, comfortable, and had very friendly staff. It also has a restaurant called Rare on the first floor and room service available. The Murrary Hill neighborhood is a nice quiet neighborhood that is very centrally located to major sight seeing areas. Overall, I recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a nice hotel at an affordable rate. Now if only they could get rid of that nasty smell in the hallway!!!

Stayed 5/11-5/13/07. X at front desk was very helpful but king studio suite (Rm.5S) was dark, dingy, worn carpet and furniture, stale, musky smell. Bath drain blocked and bath tiles had mildew, but asst. manager did nothing when I complained. Finally fixed drain after 2nd complaint. Safe location, easy 5-10min. walk to Times Square, Broadway and Grand Central Station. Service good aside from asst. manager. Rare restaurant had outstanding sweet potato fries, $12 breakfast buffet excellent value (for NYC) . Rare View rooftop bar very nice, great view. Too bad room was so crummy.

Very comfortable hotel. Had I had a cat with me I could have swung it in the room (but I wouldn't!). A short walk from the Empire State building and the UN, Madison Ave etc. Staff were friendly and helpful. I appreciated the use of low energy compact fluorescent lighting well concealed within appropriate fittings. It lowered my very sooty carbon footprint. I would be happy to stay again.
