A first class hotel in all respects -

A first class hotel in all respects - decor, service, facilities. Even taking the lift down to the pool area was an experience. This hotel exceeded all our expectations. The staff were bi-lingual, helpful friendly and courteous. The restaurant was magnificent & the staff can't do enough for you.Make sure you have dinner on the terrace at least one evening - it is magical having dinner overlooking Amalfi's lights and listening to the church bells. There is no doubt that it is expensive, however it is a wonderful experience and without a doubt was the right choice for our 3 nights in Amalfi. It may be a 5* hotel, but it is not pretentious and it is easy to feel comfortable and relaxed.

We just came back from two great weeks

We just came back from two great weeks in Italy and the Santa Caterina was the highlight hotel of the trip. We had a junior suite and the view was so amazing it was hard to do anything but sit and stare. We travel a great deal and stay at very nice hotels, but this was probably the best ever. In my opinion the food, fish dishes especially, were excellent every time. We stayed for 4 nights and ate in th hotel 3 times because of the food. The wine list was also excellent and the head waiter chose very good, less expensive local selections, when asked for ideas. No one mentioned that it's a very easy 5 minute walk into town. Although we are 65 years old, we walked both ways twice, both in the afternoon and evening, rather than wait for a taxi or bus. Coming back is a fairly steep hill, but not terrible. If you can walk around Positano, you'll have no trouble with this. One of the walks to town was to get the ferry to Positano, which was a beautiful, inexpensive way to go. The ride was less than 30 minutes and the scenery was amazing.Since we went in early Autumn, there were no crowds, great weather, plenty of pool lounges and the service was warm and helpful. We were out sightseeing each day during lunch, so never tried the pool restaurant. We'll certainly go back to the hotel in the future.

The Hotel Santa Caterina is, simply

The Hotel Santa Caterina is, simply put, Paradise! As an international tour operator I have had the opportunity to stay in many of the top 5-star hotels and resorts throughout the world. Never before have I experienced such beautiful surroundings (the Amalfi coastline, wow!) or such attentive and knowledgeable staff! From the minute we arrived for our 3 night stay celebrating our 26th wedding anniversary, to the moment when we returned 5 days later to pick up our rental car, which the hotel so kindly allowed us to leave there while we spent 4 nights on Capri, the entire staff were wonderful and oh so friendly – the door porter, the shuttle van drivers, the wait staff, the bartender, the front desk staff, and Franco, the best concierge anywhere! The décor is lovely, bright, many antiques throughout and beautiful floral arrangements daily. With so many hotels throughout Europe going the ultra-modern high-tech décor route, this was a welcome respite. The gardens are lovely and require a stroll. The location is great as you are just minutes from Amalfi town, about a 20 minute drive to Positano, a little more to Rovello, yet as it is located on the outskirts of town you avoid the crowds of tourists, thus a very relaxing stay.

Loved our stay at the Santa Caterina.

Loved our stay at the Santa Caterina. Located just before you get to Amalfi (when coming from the Sorrento area), it is in a great location - close by the ferries (we went to Capri), close to town. We were at one of the rooms at the new wing Villa il Rosso, and loved it. Modern inside, comfortable king size bed, flat screen tv, nice balcony with great view of Amalfi and the water (a nice place to drink the half bottle of sparkling wine they give you). TV includes a DVD player and they have a large selection for you to use (for free). Friendly staff.Excellent swimming pool, with bar and restaurant. Nice gardens to walk through and incredible lemons.

This is the only 5 star hotel in Amalfi.

This is the only 5 star hotel in Amalfi. It has a great location, stunning view, and the staff is very courteous and helpful. The decor is outdated (white wicker garden chairs, loud floral print cushions, and rattan) as well as gaudy artwork. The crowd is defintely older, 50-70year olds with some younger families and honeymooning couples peppered in. They have 1 elevator inside the hotel which means you wait a long time during busy hours to get on. The staff is really courteous but a little nosy and gossips among themselves about the customers. Santa Caterina is the equivalant of the prettiest girl in a small town. It might pale when compared to all the amazing hotels out there in the world but because of the limited 4 and 5 star hotels in Amalfi-it is considered the best.
