Continue with the awesome remodeling!

I recently stayed at the Long House and was shown a room that the maintenance man had just finished remodeling. The room was very comfortable with a new paint design, trimmed in wood, floral arrangment on the table and a more modern looking bathroom. He did an awesome job. My only suggestions would be for him to do ALL the rooms like this. He gave it a very warm and comfortable feeling. Cudos to the maintenance man on a job well done. The staff at the hotel were also very friendly and welcoming. I would recommend this hotel to my friends in the future. I just hope that the rest of the rooms can be remodeled in the same fashion as the one shown to me by the manager.

A Terrible experience

Here is what I wrote upon departure September 24, 2008. I got no response!
Dear Owner of the Longhouse hotel,

I write in disappointment. A friend and I were your guests last night (September 23) in Room 201.

We were initially placed in 202,

The Place to Stay!

The service was excellent from extremely friendly, helpful employees. When I called from the airport, the shuttle wasn't available. I was told just to take a cab they would pay for. It was very quick and easy. My room was ready and was clean, as was the bathroom. The continental breakfast was a perfect way to start my day, and I enjoyed talking with employees and other patrons in the breakfast area. The rustic "Alaska" look I wanted was just as I hoped it would be.

Admittedly, it was last minute and we were somewhat desperate for lodging. We also had a pet. I am told that the experience for people with pets vs those without is considerably different.

However, staying in the 2nd building, 2nd floor was awful. Old room, and we found as above-- a condom wrapper under our bed and our bathroom seemed like it might have been cleaned weeks ago. We slept on top of our sheets, and got up promptly the next morning. Took a shower in flip-flops. So if you are traveling with a pet. I would suggest going elsewhere.

The is the closest and most inexpensive lodging if you want a very short drive from the airport. I've stayed here 3 times - rooms are huge, with two queen beds, and most importantly - clean. Prie includes an pretty average brunch, but its nice after flying in at 1:00am.

Never, ever again

It started out bad when we tried to check in. Our room wasn't ready but the only clerk on duty said he would check on it for us. He promptly forgot about us and went about helping other people who were lined up at the desk. He was apparently the only person working there and as we found out later, that was pretty much the norm, only one person on duty at a time. After an hour of waiting I asked him again if our room was ready, he looked completely confused as he had completely forgotten about us. He did go to our room then and came back and said it was ready. When we got to the room the cleaning staff was just arriving and they hastily cleaned up the room, barely. The room was still pretty dirty, the bed was old, small, lumpy and sagged in the middle. It needed replacing years ago. Once, when the toilet stopped up we notified the front desk and they said they would take care of it immediately. We left for a day of sight-seeing and when we returned the toilet was still blocked. I went to the front desk and was handed a plunger. I unstopped the toilet myself. I didn't remember if their web-site mentioned that the rooms were air-conditioned or not but was nearly certain I had checked that as it is very important for my wife and I. The room was not air-conditioned and as we had a second floor room it was stifling hot at night. We were there in June so the sun didn't set and it was light pretty much all night. We had to close the drapes which completely stopped any airflow. There was a fan in the room. The continental breakfast was OK but the poor, lone desk clerk had to prepare that in the morning as well as checking in any guests, taking care of regular business and getting any guests to or from the airport. The hotel is located very close to the airport, which was convenient for our early flight out. Thankfully, all we used the room for was to sleep at night and we were gone nearly all day, everyday. It seemed to me that most guests were using this hotel as a one night stop before they caught a cruise, train or flight out to another destination in Alaska. On the first night we arrived, I accidentally dropped a small piece of chocolate in the hall-way by our room. It NEVER moved and was still in the same place I dropped it when we left. I imagine it's still there. One guest told us that the hotel had recently changed hands. It needs to change hands again. This could be a 'passable' hotel with a lot of renovations, i.e. new beds, new carpet, etc. Right now, I wouldn't stay there again if they paid me. It was greatly overpriced for the quality we received. The ONLY reason we stayed is that it was the busy season and we really couldn't find anything else. I would have paid double or triple for another room that was of even marginal quality better than the Long House Hotel. Do yourself a favor, don't stay here. I based our stay on reviews found here on Expedia. I hope this gives the next person ample warning. By the way, I am not a hotel snob. A clean, decent, well kept hotel and fairly competent staff is all I ask for. This hotel had none of that.

We only stayed here one night on our way through Anchorage to Fairbanks, but that was long enough. This is a mediocre hotel. It seemed fairly clean, but just a very average place. It was kind of noisy due to its proximity to the airport. The continental breakfast was average, nothing hot like waffles or anything. When we went to check out, the receptionist was brushing her teeth right there behind the desk. She was quite embarrassed and rushed off to spit out the toothpaste! The guy who drove the shuttle to pick us up at the airpot was also manning the front desk the night we arrived..you can imagine he was quite busy. During the "season" in Alaska, all hotels are quite expensive. Just remember the price doesn't necessarily equate with the quality. Also, we were surprised to find out that many hotels in Anchorage won't rent a room for only one night. This was an okay place to stay for one night when we couldn't find anything else.

Friendly staff. Good continental breakfast. Convenient shuttle service to and from airport and downtown Anchorage. Unfortunately, my room was near the front desk. Since I could hear people talking to the desk clerk late at night and early in the morning, I did not get much sleep.
