not egalitarian treatment and beware of the pool

We just returned from Lago Mar 2/27/09 with mixed reviews. The beach was very nice and staff very friendly. It's all the other things that are lacking from a so called 4 star hotel. We were verbally assaulted at the pool for taking someone's chair which hadn't been used for two days but was "saved"?. We complained twice about reserved chairs and we're assured that there were none. Wrong!!! The next day more than a dozen "occupied" signs were planted on chairs. The staff assured us that the pool manager would be notified, but never was. We talked to him and he admitted some long time customers did indeed have reserved seats and it is awkward at times. Thus, if the hotel had been full ,choices would be minimal. Definitely some communication problems here. We took the shuttle and it cost us $9 to go a little over a mile. At other 4 star hotels we were always given an overview of the grounds, activities, and how the hotel functions. Not here, so learn fast that gratuities are automatically added, thus you could double tip. The hotel room was o.k. with a closet that was difficult to open because the bed was up against it (till I moved it) and the bathroom at an irregular angle making it hard to get around. If you go for the beach it's great but the price (food and beach chairs) as well as the special "perks" for regulars doesn't lend this hotel to be an egalitarian opportunity. Our rating for the "4 star hotel", deserves to be more like an expensive 2.

The Lago Mar is among the finest hotels

The Lago Mar is among the finest hotels I've ever stayed at. My family got a 3-bedroom suite with ocean views and it was well worth every penny of it. The staff is really friendly and they make every effort to ensure that your vacation is perfect. There are 2 large pools and several restaurants. The hotel offers tennis, shuffleboards, outdoor bars, and of course a beautiful private beach. If you're going to Florida, stay here. It's a great secret.

NO RETURN -GERMAN AT FRONT

I loved everything except the rude and arrogant German manager who worked the front desk. He was short, discourteous, gossiped and made fun of guests, and was generally someone I wanted to avoid at all costs. I am a sophisticated 53 yo professional woman who has stayed in exotic resorts for both business and pleasure all over the US. I am sure he has cost this resort many repeat customers.
Nice Place

We stayed here in 7/06 and thought it was a real gem! We loved the quaintness of its Olde Florida Feel! The Private Beach alone is worth the stay. We like the Privacy of the Old Style Rooms with Outside Entrance. We had an Ocean Front suite and it was very clean and well stocked! The balcony opened right up to the beautiful beach! The grounds were clean and well kept. The Staff was very professional and friendly. The piano bar in the evening was very romantic and we have reservation for 7/08, and looking forward too it!

Great Hotel, too many kiddies screaming

The hotel and grounds are excellent! There are two pools, but screaming kids are a disruption. There is an older pool on the beach, my suggestion is to make that an adult only pool, and the sport pool could accomodate anyone, kids or adults. I spent Memorial Day 2008 there, and had to call the pool staff because of kids throwing balls and frisbees, and causing a complete disruption.....(and I am not an old fogey!). If parents cannot control the kids, then the pool staff needs to monitor what is going on. Evidently this hotel also has club members, some of them were disgusted and left. Not a place for a romantic interlude, although the hotel lends itself to that.

This place is not cheap but it is worth every penny. You really get the feeling that the employees care about you and want your stay to be a success.

We're going back again!

We stayed at the Lago Mar in May of 2007 and had a wonderful time.

The one bedroom suite was everything we expected and the food and service were great. The poolside area was clean and the friendly staff attanded to our every need. The computer room allowed us to keep in touch away from home and to print our return flight boarding passes.

For a location so close to the airport, can't beat it here! We hired a car and went out out every evening to the Seminole Hard Rock Casino and the Mardi Gras greyhound track and casino - all good fun.

We're counting down the days until our next stay in May 2008.

Excellent Location and Service

Lago Mar is an older hotel with excellent service and an excellent location with a beautiful private beach. It is located in the Harbor Beach neighborhood of Fort Lauderdale which is an expensive residential area. A car is must have for this hotel as there are no shops and restaurants within walking distance. The staff were all very friendly and helpful in all ways. There are no lifeguards at the beach but the public Fort Lauderdale beach, which has lifeguards and is just as nice, is just north of it and can be reached by walking on the beach or a 5 minute drive. We stayed there 5 days and enjoyed our stay. There is a nice playground for kids which our toddler enjoyed. Although the room was very clean and luxurious, the hotel could probably use some more renovations and maintenance. The indoor corridors smell musty; typical of an older hotel and pool could use re-finishing. So if you are used to everything being brand new and in perfect condition you may not be happy here. But if you are not that picky you will think it is a very charming place.
