We booked a 3 bedroom townhouse on-line

We booked a 3 bedroom townhouse on-line only to get there and be split into two rooms because there was no 3 bedroom unit. The kitchen was okay. The stove had a little leftover food on it and the microwave was missing the plate and smelled of old burnt popcorn. There are no kitchen utensils so we had to make a trip to Target. The sofa in the living room had holes in it and the carpets need cleaning. The bedrooms are a good size but my blanket had holes in the top comforter and had hair all over the blanket underneath and there were cobwebs in the corners of most of the rooms. The bathroom was adequate but there was no hotel shampoo, soap, etc. The fitness center has 1 old treadmill and an even older stationary bike. The printer in the business center did not work and the kids playground consits of a sandy area with one of those things that you climb up one side and then slide down. Fun for kids under the age of 2 maybe - my son is 8 and said the play area was a joke. Only two jets in the hot tub worked. They changed the locks on our doors while we were there and left sawdust all over the kitchen and living room floors. We had to call them twice before it was cleaned up. The staff was friendly enough but this hotel is in dire need of some updating and needs a thorough cleaning. The front desk staff could use a course in hospitality.

I arrived at the hotel and felt severely dismayed by the hotel based on the photos from the Travel website. It was poorly maintained and didn't come to the standard that i would hope to have based on the price per night. They "upgraded" my friends and I to a townhouse, and while the space was nice, the room was absolutely filthy. I wouldn't shower without sandals, and I didn't want to sleep in the bed or sit on the furniture. It also looked like one of the the 17 inch tvs had been ripped off the table leaving behind only wires and residue. I refused to stay in there, and when I went to tell the front desk that I thought the room was dirty, they asked what I wanted to do and I said I didn't want to stay there at all, and they gave me attitude about how the entire town of San Diego was booked and so "good luck". They put us back into a regular room, which was the size of a small box. I realize the hotel is a historical part of San Diego, but it was not kept up with pride and is obviously deteriorating. I was very unhappy with my stay and was told there was nothing I could do for the entire weekend because there is no manager on duty for the weekend and the desk staff didn't have the authority to help me. I was very unhappy with my stay, and was embarassed to have picked this hotel for my friends and I to stay in.

We booked this hotel while in town for the maraton due to the history and location, but were soon disappointed when music and parties around the pool continued into the late night hours keeping those who go to sleep before midnight with no recourse other than to put in ear plugs. The hotel hosted a annual fashion show one night we were there for a wonderful cause, but they did not notify us until less than 24 hrs beforehand that this would be taking place. There were a lot of 20-somethings running around drinking alcohol and a very a loud band which played until 10:30. Paying guests were asked to "go around the building" and were not allowed in the lobby and pool area to get to their rooms. My sister and I had someone barge into our room while were in bed in our pajamas. Talk about security. Beer cans and cartons were left in the hallways. We reported this to the hotel and they pretty much told us "too bad". We received no compensation for the inconvenience during our stay even though we had 12 people staying in 6 different rooms for the marathon. I would never stay in this hotel again nor would I recommend it to those I care about. At this time, management has responded to our letter and complaints.

Past its expiration date.

I never figured out what it was, but this hotel has one large smell problem - especially if you enter from the lower garage.

It is old and based on the 'stars' (Jimmy Stewart, Judy Garland, Henry Fonda, etc...) it is proud to note as its honored guests, obviously living on it's fame of over 60 years ago - far too long ago. It is also obvious that just like the list of stars needs to be rejuvinated, so does this hotel.

The staff seemed efficient and competent, but only one gentleman there seemed to know how to smile and actually try to be helpful to the guests.

Worn out and uncomfortable

Like many reviewers I selected a room here based on photographs. I thought it looked charming and unique. After waiting in the car in a line with little direction for 20 minutes, we were taken up a tiny staircase to our room. It was tiny and very dingy! It has a tv and old microwave sitting on a dresser at the end of the bed. It felt dirty, but I'm not sure if it was. I immediately called the travel website I booked through to try to be switched to a different hotel. This was not what it was supposed to be. After talking to the travel site and front desk back and forth, they switched me to a suite. The suite was better than the original room, so we took it. It was still dingy with paper thin carpet, cheap furnishings, etc. The bed wasn't very comfortable. The entrance was from an outdoor landing, like a cheap motel. It's not in a very charming part of town, either. Think gas stations, liquor stores, and Denny's. All in all, I could not recommend this hotel unti it gets an upgrade.

If I was in my twenties with no kids, this place would be ok. But as a forty year old with a small child, I didn't feel safe. We checked out twenty minutes after checking in and found a different hotel. The loud noise from the nightclub as well as passersby was too much.

Pictures do not tell it all!

The picture on the site that we visited in order to book made it look grand. Do not be fooled, the place is very old and tired. Carpets were about 5 years past needing to be replaced; thank God I brought slippers. Also, the room had a strange smell. If they would break down and redo the rooms it would be a nice place; pool and gardens were lovely.

We enjoyed the hotel very much. The history of the hotel was interesting. It was very clean and the staff was very helpful with directions and activities. The hotel was close to everything. The pool was really nice, only complaint, not enough lounge chairs.

This hotel in its day must have been very grand! The rooms could use some upgrades. The value for the money was good as well an excellent location if planning to go to Sea World & the Zoo. The beds were rather firm. When showering, we left the faucets on full HOT, however, the temperature would fluctuate from warm to cool and back to warm. Rooms kind of noisy with hall noise and sounds from upstairs. The breakfast was okay, but kind of chaotic. In addition to the waffles, toast, and bagels, it would have been nice if there could have been some yogurt and fresh fruit. Overall though, it was a great value for the money since we primarily planned to only sleep there.
