Just another chain hotel trying to differentiate itself. Cocktail hour is a nice touch though and we got better advice about where to go and what to do by networking the other guests than through the concierge. It's a good step up from a Hilton though.

We took our kids one long weekend for a drive to Oregon and ended up in Portland. We were undecided on what hotel to stay at and didn't want to go to a regular Best Western or Hilton hotel. So my husband went online to hotwire.com and typed in 4stars and up for a hotel and found Hotel Monaco.

I was so impressed with the size of our room. We thought we were only going to get a typical hotel room with 2 queen beds. But the rooms were set up with a separate living area, more like a suite. And the sofa in the living area had a pull out bed. There was a french looking sliding door to the bedroom. This room was so impressive and the view of the city was remarkable.

PROS: Nice hotel with lots of nice features
CONS: It can be pricey - without a deal from hotwire

I was bowled over by the service and the lovely appearance of their lobby and guest rooms. Highly recommended for everyone! They even gave my kid a goldfish in a bowl for the two nights we were at the hotel! (The goldfish's name was Gary - how cute!) Art the Lobby Dog is adorable and clearly loved and well-cared for by the staff. The restaurant Red Club has just been renovated and the food we had for breakfast was great. The location is also very handy for local restaurants and shopping. One front desk clerk gave us amazing lunch and dinner recommendations and seemed to know the city very well indeed! We very much appreciated the personal attention and will definitely be back next time we are in Portland!

Permanently stained my wedding dress

pros: rooms, amazing customer serviceOkay, let me be fair. Their front desk, room service, and valet was exceptional, and we really received out-of-this-world service. Honestly, some of the best service I've ever had at hotel. The one-star rating is because housekeeping lost my wedding dress for a period of time, and then it was returned to me stained.

Coming from out of town, my wedding dress had been carried on the plane, and I needed it steamed the night before my wedding. No big deal, right? I had them pick it up around 3, and when I returned from the rehearsal dinner at 9, it wasn't back in my room yet. Long story short, it had been placed in another bride's room, and it took them over an hour to locate it. The next day, when I put it on, there was a black ink stain on the upper left part of the dress (right over my chest) that became apparent to everyone. It was the size of a pen mark. It wasn't huge, but because my dress was satin, it was noticeable on the texture. Because of the timing, there was nothing we could do, and I had to move on with my day.

I did let the hotel know after the fact, and they gave us a coupon for a one-night stay, which corresponded to the excellent customer service I had received during my stay there.

I have since had me dress cleaned by a nationally recognized dress preservation company, and the stain didn't budge, which stinks.

Moral of the story...don't let them touch your clothes, but still a great place to stay.

Good for pets. Noisy. Busy. Good staff. Old people should ask for a quiet room. On a busy street. O.K.

Best Stay in Portland,OR

pros: Beautiful, great location, terrific service, great valueWhat a great experience! The service was ridiculously good. I've never met a friendlier staff and felt more at home in any other hotel. This boutique style hotel is beautiful! The decoration from lobby to room was like stepping into a Interior Design catalog...I walked through the hotel eyeing every corner for decor ideas! From the front desk to the valet guys down below, everyone went out of their way to chat with us, offer directions or places to see, and were just generally nice. Coming from Los Angeles, this felt like another planet! Great place to stay, especially for the money. A hotel like this should cost $300-$400 in any other big city! I highly recommend!

great rooms, even better concierge

pros: service, roomsIn portland last week and stayed at the hotel. While it is slightly off the Main Drag it appears that everything in Portland is within walking distance. Very close to Powells Books, the Pearl District and the Waterfront.
The rooms were very spacious and comfortable and the service was friendly.
The hotel Concierge did a great job at directing to some great restaurants in the city and we will be back because of it.
