We were surprised the morning that we checked out with a note under our door indicating that we would be charged an additional 10.00 for parking in the garage across the street (there is no parking lot). The ticket we were given in return to use in the parking garage came up as "invalid", so we had to pay an another 8.00 to exit the garage. (The hotel later removed the 10.00 charge after I called them.) Our suite had stained carpet, wallpaper that was peeling in a couple of spots, and a very cracked sink basin. However, the room was quite clean, spacious, and the bed was very comfortable. The lobby and the rest of the hotel are gorgeous- they've really done a wonderful job of preserving all the antique beauty of the building. They just need to carry that pride over into the guest rooms.

Not so Hot

Old, run down, and past its prime. Service was dismal. The facilities themselves were best described as mediocre. Rooms were uncomfortable, dirty and loud - you can hear your neighbors very clearly on all four sides....

Next time, I'll go somewhere else. I'm not opposed to old hotels, generally, I like them. The Savory in fact is a very nice place - I suggest going there instead.

Not Impressed

My company rented a conference room for four days, FRI – MON to conduct interviews and process potential applicants. I am glad I stayed at the Holiday Inn, instead of the Fort Des Moines. The staff could not have been more indifferent to us or our needs. Our company does this often and this is the worst customer service I’ve experienced.

It definitely smells that way - I would go with any other hotel before staying here. Although it has been designed to give it a high class feel (and the room service costs like you are staying at the Waldorf in IA) it has a funky smell and definitely feels old once you get to your room. The rooms are small - and the beds uncomfortable. I never considered myself a hotel snob but I guess this place changed me a little on what I look for in a place to stay.

Great Experience!

I really enjoyed my stay there. The rooms were comfortable. Though they were a little outdated, that was part of the charm. The staff was VERY helpful and friendly. Would definitely recommend it. The Raccoon River restaurant was very good, too.

This place has been a downtown Des Moines landmark for many years. Although the place is very old, it offers some updated amenities. The corner suite is very spacious but they don't have too many. Bar/restaurant are very nice too.

Me and friends stayed here for a birthday. It was dirty, totally in need of being redone. Stains on curtains. I've stayed in better motel 6's. I was totally disappointed. I did like the shuttle bus they had and the staff was friendly. The rooms and hallways were just plan nasty. I would not recommend it at all.

Very good value for the money. Although the rooms are a bit outdated, the hotel staff more than makes up for it. I have stayed at this hotel multiple times and have been greated like I was a familiar friend. Very courteous and helpful staff.

The Hotel Fort Des Moines was a very nice surprize as it is a very nostalgic as well as a historic hotel in down town Des Moines. I enjoyed my stay as it was very quiet at night. The resturant was being renovated at the time of my stay but there were plenty of choices with in walking distance to the hotel.
