The ticket we were given in return to use in the parking garage came up as "invalid", so we had to pay an another 8.00 to exit the garage. (The hotel later removed the 10.00 charge after I called them.) Our suite had stained carpet, wallpaper that was peeling in a couple of spots, and a very cracked sink basin. However, the room was quite clean, spacious, and the bed was very comfortable. The lobby and the rest of the hotel are gorgeous- they've really done a wonderful job of preserving all the antique beauty of the building. Service was dismal. The facilities themselves were best described as mediocre. Rooms were uncomfortable, dirty and loud - you can hear your neighbors very clearly on all four sides.... I am glad I stayed at the Holiday Inn, instead of the Fort Des Moines. The staff could not have been more indifferent to us or our needs. Although it has been designed to give it a high class feel (and the room service costs like you are staying at the Waldorf in IA) it has a funky smell and definitely feels old once you get to your room. The rooms are small - and the beds uncomfortable. Although the place is very old, it offers some updated amenities. The corner suite is very spacious but they don't have too many. It was dirty, totally in need of being redone. Stains on curtains. I've stayed in better motel 6's. I was totally disappointed. I did like the shuttle bus they had and the staff was friendly. The rooms and hallways were just plan nasty. I enjoyed my stay as it was very quiet at night.
