Great location

We stayed for 2 nights and had fun in Montreal. The location of the hotel is great, near St Denis, a short walk to Old Montreal... However, the hotel and the room we were in smelled strongly like cigarettes, and as non-smokers, we didn't enjoy waking up to that smell. The staff were very nice and helpful.

All things considered, I thought it was pretty goo

I have stayed at this hotel twice; 7 days in late September 2005, and for 6 days in January 2006. On both occasions, I was offered a "weekly" rate which was considerably below the advertised daily tariff.

The rooms are small, but adequate. The bathroom was compact as well, but clean and in good working order. The central heating proved up to the task of keeping the room warm in the depth of winter. If things got too hot, I could either turn off the radiator, or open a window. The mattress was not new, and had a bit of a sag . This did not cause any concern either to me or to my 13 year old son.

The staff were outgoing, and friendly. Many ideas were put forward about things to do and see. All the hotel personnel speak both English and French, so communication is not a problem.

One of the strongest points about the hotel is its location, adjacent to the central bus/metro station . The airport bus also operates both to and from this station, so all an air traveller has to do is get off the bus and cross rue St Hubert to arrive at the hotel. No additional taxi fares! The Metro Station offers access to all major subway lines. If you like to get around on foot, you are perhaps 5 minutes from the night-life of rue St Denis, 15 minutes from the Place des Arts, and 25 minutes from the shopping mecca located underneath Place Ville Marie. Another 10 minutes further down rue Ste Catherine, you come to the trendy restaurants and bars of rue Crescent and de la Montaigne.

What is not to like about this hotel? Well, first of all, the neighbourhood is not great. Gentrification hasn't taken place yet, and there are homeless people , drug dealing, and street prostitution close by. This is not so much in evidence during the day, but it can become much more visible during the evening. I never felt in any danger; police are constantly in the area, and the street people tend not to bother with anyone outside their circle of friends. However, I always moved quickly along the street, and stayed alert for any signs of trouble.

In summary, this hotel is ideal for somebody who wants an inexpensive place to sleep, with convenient access to the downtown area. The place has a lot of charm, but it is an old building in a run-down neighbourhood. If you are looking for luxury accommodation, look elsewhere.
