Cheap digs

If you want to stay downtown next to the action without paying over $200 a night, definitely try this place. There isn't any privacy in the dorm style rooms, so it's preferable, if traveling with a family or friends, to just book all the beds in a room with a bath (if available). I also loved how they posted things to do, like walking tours. It had internet access, great fresh, healthy spread for breakfast, a communal kitchen where you could cook your own food and share it with others, funky tv room and spacious lobby and game room. It wasn't the fault of the hostel but I wish the guests were more approachable because, literally, the United Nations was represented there. For instance, my roommates were from Holland. Mostly young people stay there but there were also older travelers. I would love to be part of a group of travelers that just stays in hostels all over the country and world. It'd be like reliving college- just with grown folks!

Decent enough for the budget traveler

The hostel was very decently furnished. A clean bed and hot shower are always welcomed after a day's traveling.

But for USD30+ a night, you might be able to find better deals on Priceline.com. Otherwise, this hostel in Chicago offers a strategic position near several sites of interests and will make a satisfactory choice.

pros: location, price, things to doWith out the hostel we would not be able to visit Chicago as often as we do. With the affordable rates it means more mini vacations a year for the family. Hostelling gives you more opprotunity to visit high price areas on a small budget. We salute Mayor Daily for his support of the Chiago hostel, and Hostelling International.

No fountain in the lobby, but

pros: Safe, Very Convenient, Helpful staffYou will not find a better located, more safe and less expensive place to stay. Everything a visitor needs is within a stonethrow: the library for free e-mail, the park and lake front for strolling, the opera, restaurants, transit and shopping...you name it. The staff couldn't be more helpful---they are volunteers, and do not work for pay. You feel protected passing the 24-hour guard and CCTV when you walk in from the street, and you get to meet the most interesting people from all over the world in the lounges, the reading rooms, dining room and the kitchen. This is what staying in a hostel is all about.
