The Halcyon Hotel was adequate for our needs and would be better for a longer time stay in S.F. The rooms were plain, but clean and functional. Overall a great deal in this expensive city. We also stayed at The Mosser, which is in a better location (more centrally located) and had those special little touches that made it special. The Halcyon was $** for one night and The Mosser was $** on a Saturday night. The Halcyon would have been $** for Saturday night, but they were booked up. I'm glad we stayed at The Mosser to compare the two. If you need a nice place to stay for one night, I'd recommend The Mosser. But for a longer stay, such as a week or a month, then The Halcyon would be a better choice.

Practical Budget Considerations

I stayed for 6 nights at the hotel for a week-long SF getaway. The hotel provided a safe, secure, comfortable stay where it felt like coming home to a warm, cozy apartment especially at the end of each hectic day full of walking and sightseeing. Staff were always responsive to my questions and concerns. I appreciated the kitchenette where I was able to heat and store food products I bought for snacking, quick meals, and beverage. The wet bar sink was also a nice touch. The television was good company as I caught up with news and some of my favorite shows. The hotel was adequate for my needs and budget, making my extended SF getaway a memorable one.

The 25 small efficiency studios have a casual decor with utilitarian bookshelves, a small dining table and bright bay windows. The homey ambience is more reminiscent of a family-run B&B than a discount hotel. But with an in-room refrigerator, microwave, toaster, coffeemaker, dishes, silverware, satellite TV, unlimited free local calling, and a coin-operated laundry room in the basement, the value of an extended stay is unbeatable. Further discounted weekly and monthly rates are also available.

PROS: pretty rooms
CONS: small rooms

Since we stayed for six nights, the seventh night was free. The location is a bit iffy, as it borders on the Tenderloin area, although it is only 3 blocks west of Union Square. Just don't head south early in the morning or late at night. The rooms are pretty small, although they come with a refrigerator, microwave, toaster, coffeemaker, etc. There is also cable t.v. and an in-room safe. The locks on the door could be better (e.g., a deadbolt would have been nice). The bathroom was tiny (had to walk over the toilet to get to the shower). No elevator, although the building only has four floors. Washer and dryer in the basement of the building. Staff pretty helpful.
