My husband and I were going to a concert. We splurged a bit on this hotel instead of going to something ruddy like usual and it was very nice. I walked in wearing heavily chained pants and a bleached, old, tacky Slayer shirt and the staff still treated me like they would have if I had walked in wearing full Armani. A couple things that bugged me was that when I got to the room the batteries in the t.v. remote were dead, but I called and they were up in five minutes with fresh batteries. Also, you had to pay for parking, which wasn't something we were prepared for. Over all though, it was extremely nice and very worth the money.

Shuttle drivers helped us out a lot.Bar area had terrible service. Expensive for what you get.“Hotel kind of dated. Room AC was ok but it was cooler in the hall. Bed sunken in the middle.”

I really liked the room furniture and layout and loved the bathroom sink stand. My room was a little musky smelling of an old air system.“The staff is out stands out in my mind. The gentleman who drive the shuttle van was very friendly and on-time. The only two down sides are that the lobby area saw cigarette-smoky and the hotel is next to a police station and I was awoken during the night from sirens. The hotel did have ear-plugs in a cute baggie on the bed. I was surprised that the coffee product that is supplied in the room was real good. I had stayed at a 4-star hotel in the previous month and their coffee product wasn't good.”

Upon arrival we were booked in smoking room but we do not smoke. The room smelled like old stalled smoke. Ask to move rooms was able to accomadate the following day. Non smoking room seemed nicer! Of course fresh. View was specatular. Front desk employees were very nice and thoughtful! Especially Mattie!! Elevators broke had only one working for one day with 15 stories that was not cute. Pool is totally in doors no sunlight and water was cold. Jacuzzi was cold too. Found it cheaper to pay meters some days only $*/hr avail most of time. No meter charge on weekends!! Overall after moving to the nonsmoking room we were satisfied. Oops forgot did not like the mattress and hated pillows poly stuffing and clumpy. I would stay again just as for nonsmoking room and bring your own pillows. Great Location! Enjoy.

My 6-year old son and I stayed one night there to do some bike-riding , canal boat ride & swim in the hotel pool (which was pretty nice). However, when we got there, the hotel elevator got stuck, freaking out my son. They got us out after about 10 minutes - we had to jump down a couple of feet onto the 3rd floor after someone opened up the doors manually from the outside. A manager gave us a free breakfast and upgraded our stay to a suite, which I thought was fair compensation for the incident. When I later asked the front desk about the elevators, they claimed that they do get stuck occasionally (??!!), but that it shouldn't have taken 10 minutes to get us out. The next morning when we were checking out, people were complaining that the parking gartage elevator had broken! The employees were nice, not overtly rude at all, but slightly less "professional" than those of other comparably priced hotels.Moral of the story - If you stay here, get a low floor and take the stairs.

I enjoyed the downtown location so that I could walk to local restaurants/places of interest.I did not like the pool. It would have been better to have an outdoor pool or have windows that opened in the summer.“Everyone at the hotel was very friendly and helpful. The downtown location was close to the Civil War Battleground National Park and a private Civil War Museum. It was also close to Shokko Bottom/Slip which had bookstores, restaurants and other shops. We were able to walk to all of these attractions. A free shuttle was available for use within 2 miles of the hotel. I did not care for the pool because it was enclosed and very hot/steamy. My kids on the other hand had a great time swimming. A few opened windows would have helped. Our room overlooked the James River and we saw a beautiful sunset one night. The beds were comfortable. The room was clean. We did not get room service. A great stay for us.”

I stayed at this hotel because they offered a great discount price to the group with which I traveled. Unfortunately, myself and other members of the group had a terrible experience. My first night there, the fire alarm went off and we had to evacuate at 4:30 a.m. That wasn't bad in and of itself. The bad part was that they didn't have anybody who knew how to properly reset it, and it went off again 5 more times in the course of 90 minutes. Also, the ground level exit doors in both emergency stairs would not open. We had to back-track to the third floor, and go down the hall to the other stairs to exit at the lobby level. If there had been an actual fire, this would have been catastrophic. In addition, upon arrival I found the carpet to be quite damp and obviously water damaged near the AC unit. It turned out a hose had become disconnected. I found broken glass on the bathroom floor - with my bare foot! And the fun doesn't stop there. We left a suitable tip for housekeeping each day. Sometimes the tip was taken, other days it was not, but we never had consistent restocking of the in-room coffee and cup supplies. Our group was also supposed to have fridges in our rooms, but most of us had to ask for them after our arrival. And the hot tub was never "hot", only warm.
