We stayed here because the description and pictures looked nice, and it was reasonably close to Union Square. This hotel is very old an needs to be completetly remodeled. The walls are very thin, the sliding glass door was almost impossible to open and close, and the bathroom was like a hospital bathroom due to the industrial toilet. The parking garage is dingier and more confusing than your average SF garage. Jack Tars Bar was also a diappointment, the chicken strips we ordered were a freezer burned mystery maet.

best budget option in SF. I lived in the area for 6 years, and stayed here when I came back to visit friends. Safe area, pretty much on top of mass transit, clean rooms, cable works. What more could you possibly want at this price? I have paid more for pretty dingy places in Palo Alto and Mountain View. Yes, the rooms are dated and boring, the wallpaper peeling in places and dents and dings on the furniture. But they're really clean. If the fanciness of the room is important enough to you to pay more, by all means do so. But if you want a nice and really cheap place to stay while you enjoy travelling around SF, you could do MUCH worse.

I was worried after reading the mixed reviews here. I wanted to write to state how happy I am that I stayed here when I was traveling around SFO for job interviews. The room was comfortable, and well maintained. The pool was heated and clean. The hotel isn't hard to get to (BART to civic center, then catch the bus for 10 uphill blocks) - $15 to airport as well.Showers- Yes the showerheads are a bit low (I am 5'5), but does not limit ones ability to become clean. It could be annoying at times.Dining advice- Eat elsewhere

The hotel was very old & not well maintained. They charged us $10.00 a day for internet access , thus making the cost of the stay not a real good deal at all. The beds were worse than an old hospital beds, and the room heater didn't work.

We stayed at the Cathedral Hill Hotel.

We stayed at the Cathedral Hill Hotel. This hotel was described as "recently refurbished," and after having stayed there I wonder what exactly was refurbished. The carpet was pretty old and dingy looking and honestly i felt uncomfortable walking in bare feet on it. Also, one of the reasons I chose this hotel was because of the movies and nintendo games advertised, but we were unable to access these features for some reason and the staff wasn't really interested in actually figuring out why. There was a nintendo controller but no option to even select games to play (although there were options for movies-we just couldn't access them). The good points were that the staff was distant and not overly-friendly, which is something i prefer, and the location was decent.

THE CATHEDRAL HOTEL IS EXCELLENT

I took the time to read all of the reviews of the Cathedral Hill Hotel before my stay there and l I can say that it was very reasonably priced. Everything was clean, the staff was very expedient and perhaps dry at moments (but still knowledgable) while others were very extreemly friendly and helpful. The carpet, walls, heating, lighting etc were all in perfect working order and it's just hard to imagine why or how anyone could complain about this place?! People that complain bitterly are usually just looking for free upgrades like more expensive rooms that they just don't want to pay for and when they don't get what they want they complain that the staff is rude. Typical. I have seen this literally a thousand times.I work at a hotel in Southern California and it sickens me that so many people are so petty as to resort to this kind of tactic as revenge for their not getting the suites or other upgraded rooms.that they thought they could get by simply complaining or by bitterly"asking for the manager". Here's what you can really expect at the Cathedral Hill Hotel. Five levels of parking with virtually the cheapest hotel parking you can find in San Francisco ANYWHERE. It's only $20.oo pr night. I did the research. There is a gift shop, hair salon, bar & grill, cafe, pool and it's only 8 or so blocks from Union square. You are also a stone's throw from any kind of restaurant you might want and the night life on Polk st one block away was all kinds of fun. Side note :People you need to know that most hotels in major cities charge for parking, internet & breakfast & San Francisco is NO EXCEPTION! For your money you will not get a better deal in terms of room size and options. Keep in mind that if you only "book on line" and never actually call the hotel that you have made the reservation with you may actually be paying more than if you just called the hotel directly. This happens ALL THE TIME. Do your homework! Once you book on line you also can't qualify for discounts on rooms or parking because you already have a pre set on line rate. Oh and if you are going to whine about getting a queen instead of a king like you requested-then perhaps you should consider the fact that in all lines of work-stock RUNS OUT. Call ahead and have your room blocked for exactly what you want instead of going on-line to book a room and then going on line to vent about it later. People-please just GROW UP. I cannot believe what I have read on here about this hotel. I work in hospitality and know that a lot of these "reviews" are written by misguided and uninformed people that are really in no way travellers. Look at what they compare it to, the Howard Johnsons by the side of the road. Yeah- Ho Jo's can give you free internet parking and breakfast because they're not dealing with a 400 room property like the Ritz Carlton, Hyatt or Holiday Inn. Anyway-this is just to be informative and not rail against the inexperienced traveller but in a way it is. It's just frustrating to see so many people with a room rate of $79.00 think they are entitled to something more than a standard room. That's just not the way it works even if you ARE staying at a 3 star hotel.
I hope that when next you make arrangements to travel that you take some of this into consideration and know that if you really want something for free the EASIEST way to get it by far is to be extreemely nice to the front desk staff and that just because on-line companies promise you 4 star rooms for cut rate prices it is also true that your reservation gets far less consideration than the people that are willing to pay for what they want. Their rooms are blocked first and all the on line reservations are considered last. Just telling it like it is people.

The list of disappointments is long. Our confirmed and paid for room with a king bed was not to be. The front desk could not have cared less and told us that the room with two queens, the only one they could "give" us, was larger than the one we reserved! What?! That aside, the bathroom was tired, the toilet handle leaked at each flushing, the carpet was filthy and the controls to the heater/ac unit did not work. The television service only offered basic cable, the downstairs restaurant was below average and the hotel parking was $22.80 per day including tax. Our antennas should have gone up when the bellhops scattered as we pulled up and entered the lobby. We felt, after reading all of the other reviews, that perhaps our room (#466) was an afterthought: small, dirty, tired and out of date.

The hotel is on Van Ness Ave which is a major bus route so it was very convenient. Across the street from the hotel is a wonder bakery which is open 24/7. There is a major movie theater 2 blocks from the hotel.
The hotel is old but OK, we didn't require much for service so the price and location was a major factor for us. Pool is not open during the wnter.

while the people and staff were very very nice, it is NOT a no-smoking hotel as it is supposed to be. People smoke day and night, in the middle of the night. The odor and smoke fumes reached us even with our door/windows closed. Poor lighting in the hotel, small narrow tub and shower head was too short (I'm only 5'5" and the shower was too short for me).
