I truly wish I had read these reviews before booking at this hotel. I had the same problem someone below mentioned..plus more:
1)I booked a King bed, and was given a Queen with the front desk person saying "all" of the rooms were booked even though I reserved my King 14 days in advance online. Apparently they don't check their online reservations.
2)The front desk person was very rude, tried to charge me for the Queen room when I had already paid online for the King. (It took a manager to actually get a refund on the previous reservation)
3)The manager told me to actually get the room I reserve online I have to also call the same day to make sure they are holding my room..wow.
4)The rooms are incredibly noisy, you can hear EVERYTHING going on above, below and next to you.

Would not stay here again even if someone paid me to!

Great Deal!

We were looking for a clean, convenient, safe location to stay for a reasonable price while visiting the Big Apple. The hotel offers shuttle service to and from Newark Airport and Penn Station Newark (just a few blocks away) that takes you directly into Penn Station NY in 20 minutes. Rooms were large, comfortable and quiet. We were definitely return to this hotel.

I had read the reviews and I was a bit

I had read the reviews and I was a bit nervous to stay, especially since it was just me and my two young sons. But the price was right ($*) and we would save a lot of money during our week. The room was beautiful!!! We had brand new everything--carpet, furniture, even our clean shower curtain was changed while we were there. It was spotlessly cleaned each day. They even started a guest lounge that had a free continental breakfast and snacks throughout the day--nice touch. The fitness room appeared to be brand new and they even set up a new business room with about 4 computers during our stay. The reviews mentioned a less-than-hospitable staff and I would have to agree. Not one front desk member was ever nasty but it seemed that a few lessons in a welcoming, customer service attitude are in order. The shuttle goes to the airport and Penn Station every hour but at 11:00 one day, the driver was aready at the airport and I would have to wait until 12:00 to get to Penn Station. We walked. It was scorching hot that day and it would have been nice to save the walk. They need to rethink the shuttle system so that it is useful to guests. Other than that, the neighborhood seems safe, at least from the station to the hotel. We vacationed in NYC each day, which was easy using the PATH from Penn, and paid way less and got so much more than we would in NYC.

It's not a treat

I found the staff at Robert Treat to be rude and unhelpful. I had to stay here for 6 weeks due to work, so I didn't want maid service every day. After a couple days of putting the "do not disturb" sign on my door, the housekeeping manager called me at 8 am on a Saturday morning to ask why I was "refusing service". It was a constant battle to have my choices respected - what is the point of having "do not disturb" and "maid service please" signs if staff do not pay attention to them?

Parking was also a problem. The hotel parking lot also has spaces for local businesses and is used for NJPAC or other events. Often my car was blocked in, and once the parking attendant directed me to a part of the lot reserved for the local businesses, which meant another early morning phone call. This time it was 7am and I was told I had to move my car or be towed. When I asked the front desk where I was allowed to park, the clerk said he didn't know.

I ended up unplugging my phone so they could no longer disturb me, and I spent many nights in New York with friends - as many as possible. Please do yourself a favor and go anywhere else.

Jekyl and Hyde Hotel w/police!

This hotel.... the "historic" Robert Treat... is not even in its original building. The current hotel is next door and was built in the 60's with completly diffrent architecture. Terrible experience... but a better price than staying in manhatten.
1) We were only given one room key for two people
2) We reserved a king sized bed but received a double. thankfully they didnt charge us extra.
3) Our pillows seemed unusually lumpy, and when further examination, they were actually peices of foam ripped up sewn into a casing.
4) The so-called "twice hourly shuttle" actually runs whenever they want. The driver was often absent and needed to be found in the morning to take us to Penn Station, which is within walking distance. However, the neighborhood is so shady that any walk to or from the hotel after dark would be taking your life into your own hands.
Every time we called for the shuttle to pick us up from Penn Station, save for once, it was said that it was either "at the airport" or only ran "on the hour." Twice we had to walk home from Penn station after one AM.
Once, they reimbursed us for the cab fare back to the hotel, but the following night they refused, and even went as far as to yell at me.
5) Late at Night and in the morning, the front desk staff, driver, and even the SECURITY officer are often seen sleeping. This is especially nerve-wracking seeing as the neighboorhood is shady at night and full of beggars and people trying to "bum a smoke"... or more.
6) With 3 shuttles, I was told a variety of things, ranging from "one doesnt work," to "we only have one driver." Actually USING the 3 shuttles would make thier claim to run them twice hourly a reality.
7) They do have a beautiful ballroom and conference space which was unfortunetly rented out to a College party. The room it was held in was supposed to hold 500-700, but people just kept coming in-until two am! The police had to come a number of times to kick people out and they reported almost 2,000 people crammed in. When the party finally wound down, there were at least 3 parties in guest rooms. On my floor, at least two rooms were FULL of people, and the floor above us had three rooms of loud drunk people until 3am. After numerous calls to the front desk, the police came and kicked a few people out. This lead to some fights outside of our building which were lound and dangerous. The parties did not stop there! The loudness continued until 3 when the police arrived for a THIRD time to finally shut it down. The next morning, we were told we didnt have to pay for that night, since it involved no actual sleeping. Upon checking out, this was untrue. We had to pay for our full stay.
8) If you do stupidly choose to stay here, do not expect a manager before 11am or after 5pm. A request to call him at a resonable hour was scoffed at.
9) Buy your own newspapers! The website and brochure claimed daily free newspapers. We never received one, and there is nowhere within a few blocks to purchase one!
10) The hotel resteraunt does not have breakfast, although each room has hotel-coffee. The nearest coffee shop, Starbucks-3 blocks away, says it opens at 6 but actually opens at 7. Also-mostly closed on weekends.
11) There are often very questionable people hanging around the lobby after dark.
12) dont bother to complain to the desk, they will outwardly yell at you, deny facts and laugh at you, that is, if they dont ignore you.

Don't count on any help from the staff,

Don't count on any help from the staff, especially the front desk or shuttle drivers. They make you feel as if you are inconveniencing them by staying there. Waited nearly 2 hours for shuttle from the airport. We also made the mistake of getting into the shuttle 2-3 minutes before it was due to depart to the airport. The driver, who happened to be sleeping in the shuttle, told us to get out. They also quoted us one rate and then charged us a higher rate for our room.

I stayed at the Robert Treat hotel...on the second night I smelled cigarrette smoke coming out of the vents, so i switched rooms, later on in the second room I wake up with BUG BITES ALL OVER MY ARMS AND BACK. my wife also had bites on her.. I felt this was the worst experience of my life. The people in Newark are absolutely rude and dangerous. You need to be careful when walking alone at night. The restaurant at the Robert Treat is a wannabe classy restaurant with loud people shouting at the bar. Ive never had sucn a bad experience.
The employees also enjoy laughing and joking about the tenants as well.

This Robert Treat Hotel was anything but a treat!

first of all who is robert treat?,I stayed with my family and I felt my stay at this hotel was absolutely terrible. I only stayed in the hotel to sleep 4-5 hrs each day, yet in that time I could barely sleep.
there are bugs, cigarrette smoke, people walking in at 4 am and playing the elevators at 430 am. They then blast their tv sets at 5 am. This hotel should be investigated for foul play and incompetence.

Don't stay here

I realize that we are on that Newark is on the east coast, but for 100 bucks I ought to get something good in Newark! I had to stay there, like lots of other people, because of the bar exam. Basically, the elevators didn't work and there was no apology or even a stairway that went all the way to the ground floor. They also own the building next door, so you had to use those elevators half the time, but one can only walk through to the hotel from some floors, contrary to what they told me there is no wireless internet in the rooms, the cable had bad reception. On top of everything else, the restaurant was mediocre and overpriced. The staff at the front desk pretty much acted like it wasn't there problem that the elevators were broken. The service at this place is more comparable to eastern Europe than anyplace in the US or western Europe. I was very disappointed.
