Staying Healthy While Traveling Requires Planning and Preparation
By: Cynthia Grant
Travel, whether it is for business or pleasure, requires that we stay healthy. Here are a few travel health tips. A successful business trip is more easily attainable if we can stay alert and healthy. Staying healthy will make your vacation much more enjoyable and will allow us to take full advantage of every moment.
Travel health is very difficult to maintain when on an airplane. Lots of people confined to a small space breathing the same recycled air and some of them already ill. Not a good way to start but a necessary evil for much of our travel. Although we should always be striving to maintain our immune system try to pay special attention to this prior to boarding an airplane. Maintaining travel health will require that you begin your trip well rested. Try to think far in advance of your departure date of those things that will need to be taken care of prior to leaving. Who will be taking care of your pets, plants and picking up your mail are examples of things that you can make arrangements for weeks before you leave. Before you leave on your vacation plan in advance for what needs to be done. Try not to leave too much for the last day before you leave. If you are prepared that last minute project won't "stress you out"!
Food can be another factor in maintaining your travel health. Processed foods, sugar, caffeine, alcoholic beverages not enough water intake can all add to the possibility of becoming ill during travel. Remember that the airline food is not going to be synonymous with maintaining your travel health. It is most likely full of Trans fats, refined white flour and preservatives. Think about perhaps packing a healthy lunch or dinner on your own. Pack a big salad or a nice sandwich made on whole grain bread, fruit when allowed by the airline, nuts or granola. The airplane will be able to provide water so drink, drink, and drink. Alcoholic drinks will only add to your jetlag if traveling out of your time zone. Caffeinated drinks are dehydrating and soft drinks are full of sugar or chemicals. Stay as hydrated as possible.
Jet lag is one of the first conditions to strike while traveling. It manifests itself in many ways. Most common of which are disorientation, fatigue, headache, and susceptibility to illness or insomnia. There can be many more symptoms but these are the most common. If on business travel it can be a real threat to your presentations and meetings. If on vacation it's going to make you want to spend more time sleeping than enjoying sightseeing or simply utilizing all the time you can to enjoy. If on a business trip it can effect your presentations and meetings by not letting you be your best. Some travel health tips to avoid the effects of jet lag include drinking plenty of water to stay hydrated, adjust your bedtime to the local time as soon as possible, try to eat on local time. If you are traveling for business adjust your schedule whenever possible to those times of the day when you will have the most energy according to your home time. Also try to spend some time every day outdoors.
While making your plans look ahead to any medications you may need. Will any of your prescriptions run out while you're gone? Plan ahead so that you are not without your prescriptions. Computers link many larger pharmacy chains so that you are able to get a refill while away. This won't be of help if you're traveling abroad. If you are traveling abroad and often use an over the counter medication is certain to purchase this before you leave. This also includes any vitamins or supplements you take on a regular basis.
May these travel health tips help you to enjoy every moment of your vacation and that every business trip is a successful one.
