San Francisco didn't get to be one of the world's most popular vacation destinations on its own. Yes, you can get wild at North Beach clubs after a deliciously carb-heavy meal in one of the neighborhood's many trattorias. Yes, you can drop a serious amount of cash on fabulous finds at the new Westfield San Francisco Center or in the tony shops lining the streets of Pacific Heights and Russian Hill. And yes, you can visit iconic locations like the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, Golden Gate Park, Haight Ashbury and the Castro.
But what makes San Francisco such a vaunted destination among travelers the world over is about more than what lies within city boundaries. Unlike New York, London and Chicago, San Francisco is surrounded by destinations as fabulous as the city itself.

Known for its plethora of art galleries and waterfront shops, Sausalito is one of those places that makes you instantaneously jealous of anyone lucky enough to call it home. After ambling down Bridgeway, where you'll find the majority of the shops, opt for brunch at the Lighthouse Café, a favorite among locals. Meat eaters: the bacon here could win awards for its crispiness. The town is also the departure point for San Francisco Sea Plane Tours. Up to six passengers can climb aboard sea planes for bird's eye views of major landmarks around the Bay Area - an excellent option for amateur photographers.

Much quieter than San Francisco, this seaside town is known for its scenic hiking trails, thick fogs and surfer mentality (note the Taco Bell located right on the main beach). For a dose of California comfort food along the way, stop by Nona's Kitchen.
