We finally arrived in Rio - the most talked about city in South America. With the huge hype which surrounds the city of Rio, it is easy to take it all with a pinch of salt, however upon arriving it was clear that the hype is fully justified. The beaches or Copacabana and Ipanema are second to none (albeit a little crowded). There are very few places in the world where you can be sat on a beach with skyscrapers literally metres behind you. The Sugarloaf and Cristo Redentor are also not to be missed. The only problem with Rio is the amount of unsavioury people which the hoards of tourists attract after dark. The street parties of Lapa are probably the best example of this and it is definatly not the place to take any valuables. The icing on the cake was the trip to the biggest favela in Rio - Rochinio. I had some serious reservations about going into the favela and with good reason. The tour was great and expelled some of the myths associated with the favelas but also served only to compound others. Rio is definatly one of the major highlghts of South America.
