Newcastle, Australia
The beautiful Shoal bay
Once upon a time, Ems and Kt decided to go on a camping trip. When Adam (ems bro) suggested Nelsons bay as a nice place we thought why not give it a go. Bad weather warnings did not deter and we were soon climbing aboard a coach. casting an eye around we did notice that the average age of the handful of other travellers seemed to be 60 and over...

Three and a half hours later, the bus came to a stop only for the driver to look at us in complete surprise...there was nowhere for us to stay in Nelsons bay. The look on his face suggested we had made a big mistake with our choice of destination. We were in the middle of nowhere! Anyway, he took pity on us and took us down the road to Shoal bay, complete with one pub and campsite.* To call it dead would be an understatment. I don't think anyone under the age of 79 had ever visited Shoal bay, so we were quite a rarity. The pensioners did give us a few funny stares through their thick lensed glasses!

As soon as we left the tent the heavens decided to open, lightening struck, thunder rolled and Em and I took shelter in some public toilets. We decided to make a run for better shelter and i went flying face first into the mud. So dripping wet and looking bedraggled we made our way to the pub and the merriment proceeded (we needed it) with some of the locals who showed us how to partay shoal bay styleee.

The next day Ems and I woke up wondering how on earth we were going to fill up 24 hours in the land that time forgot. We took a stroll by the bay, through the shoal bay mental institute and up a mountain. On our way down Em and i were confronted by the most enormous lizard thing! It must have been about a metre long and it was just waddling along the path right in front of us. We followed it for what seemed like ages, i nearly wet myself it was so cool! It definitley brought out the Steve Irwin in me.

Next on the agenda was a dolphin watch in Nelsons bay. We were told our chances to see some were not good - The time of day was bad and a storm was brewing. As we set off i was already thinking how we could get our money back but my cynical side was certainly proved wrong... the dolphins were just the most beautiful things ever. They swam right next to the boat just next to where Em and I were stood. I forgot everything else in the world and just watched them spin and leap together in the pull of water from the boat. It was one of the best experiences ever. They looked so happy and so was I!

In the evening we went back to the only pub again, met some fishermen, had a lesson in fishing and then were waited on while the fishermen cooked us fresh fish on the bbq.

Our nightmare trip to nowhereland turned out pretty well, but we were pretty relieved to be sat on the bus, back to civilisation for us...

*By campsite i mean old peoples home
